CLEAN, CONVENIENT, AND CHEAP

Big cities like New York and London have a lot of great things. They have museums, parks, shopping centres, and a huge variety of restaurants. However, there are a lot of annoying things in big cities. The most common problems are air pollution and noise.

Traffic is the main cause of air pollution and noise. For example, drivers in New York are famous for honking their horns and shouting. That noise drives many visitors crazy - it even drives a lot of the locals crazy, too. Other big cities have similar problems with their traffic.

City governments have a lot of pressure to solve these problems. The most common solution is public transportation. Public transportation is a form of travel provided by the government. For example, New York's biggest form of public transportation is the subway.

Public transportation helps reduce these problems, but it is not enough. Another solution is bicycle sharing.  This is a system that provides cheap bicycles. In cities that have bicycle sharing programmes, there are spots that have parked public bikes. People borrow the bikes and use them. They can drop off the bike at the same spot where they borrowed it, or they can drop it off at another spot.

Bicycle sharing programmes are different in each city. In some cities, the bikes are completely free. They are not even locked. In other cities, you have to pay a small deposit. You get the deposit back when you return the bike. In still other cities, you need to have a membership with the bicycle sharing programme. Once you have a membership with the bicycle sharing programme, you can use a bike at any time you want.

Bicycle sharing is hugely popular all over the world. People love this system because it is cheap, clean, and easy to use. There are bicycle sharing systems in dozens of countries and hundreds of cities. In total, there are more than 530 bicycle sharing systems around the world, and that number is going up all the time.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct  answer to each of the questions.

The Great Debate over GM Foods

One of the hottest topic in agriculture today is genetically modified (GM) foods. GM foods have been on the  market since 1994, when a company called Calgene started selling GM tomatoes. Since then, other GM foods  including papaya, corn, and plums to name a few have been developed.

The main benefit of GM foods is that they can be a more economical solution than non GM foods. Scientists  found a way to modify many plants to make them more resistant to weeds, diseases, and pests. This allows  the plants to grow in tougher climates and conditions, which should lead to lower food prices and increase  the overall food supply.

However, many consumers still have their doubts about GM foods. For one, they feel that by eating GM  foods people are messing with nature. Until now, humans have survived on food that was produced without  any interference from science. Even though many lab studies show that GM foods are safe in the short term,  opponents feel that not enough long-term testing has been done yet.

Another major issue in the GM foods debate is its labelling. Current US laws do not require producers to  label their foods as GM. This has upset many consumers who feel they have the right to clearly know how  the food they are buying is produced. On the other hand, producers are afraid to label their foods as GM  because they feel it will result in less product sales, as people may assume that there is something wrong with  GM foods.

This controversy is not just on the level of consumers and producers. The issue of non GM foods has also  become a block to a major free trade agreement between the US and Europe. GM foods are banned  throughout most of Europe, while they are quite common throughout the US. Since many American GM  food producers would like to sell their foods overseas in Europe, the US is requesting that European nations  eliminate laws banning GM foods. However, many European nations are not fully convinced that these  products are safe.

For recent graduates, internships may become a stepping stone to full-time, paid employment. Before  accepting an offer to work as an intern you should get some information about the company's reputation  of procuring their interns and decide accordingly. If they usually hire one intern but have tens of employees  working day and night, it is better to look for other companies. The best place to have an internship position

is an organization that gives you an opportunity to gain real work experience and develop your skills instead  of using you as a cheap worker.

Another thing that should be considered is the size of the company. Sometimes bigger and more established  organizations are better as they have a clear hierarchy and therefore it gives you a clear idea of your position  and the job description and most importantly, it will be easier to get a mentor. Startups with only five  employees are usually more flexible in terms of job responsibilities and therefore it makes it harder to define  your position and get mentors.

After you choose a company, do a little research on the company including the people who work there. You  can do a Google search and comb social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to dig deep about the  company's hiring managers and what they expect from a new employee.

Social media is also very useful to keep in touch with as many people as you can and build your network. Do  not hesitate to maintain any personal connection you have because those connections could be the first ones  who inform you about a new job opening or any vacant positions you can apply for. If you aim for a dream job, do not overlook an entry-level position just because it offers a mediocre salary.  Entry-level employees are more likely to be given room to grow and learn from their mistakes. They will also  be able to figure out the job routines and get used to them when they actually get the position they have been  dreaming about.

Question 31. The word "procuring” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.

A. dismissing B. training C. hiring D. interviewing

A. employees B. job routines C. positions D. mistakes

Question 34. Why is a more established organization a better place to work as an intern?

A. It has flexible work hours

B. It has clear job descriptions.

C. It offers higher salary.

D. It offers full-time position

Question 35. Why is networking important for recent graduates?

A. To get information about job openings.

B. To maintain good relationship with fellow interns.

C. To keep in touch with an ex-employer.

D. To get information about job security.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct  answer to each of the questions.

While watching sports on TV, the chances are children will see professional players cheating, having  tantrums, fighting, or abusing officials. In addition, it's highly likely that children will be aware of well known cases of sportspeople being caught using drugs to improve their performance. The danger of all this is  that it could give children the idea that winning is all that counts and you should win at all costs. Good  behavior and fair play aren't the message that comes across. Instead, it looks as if cheating and bad behavior  are reasonable ways of getting what you want. This message is further bolstered by the fact that some of  these sportspeople acquire enormous fame and wealth, making it seem they are being handsomely rewarded  either despite or because of their bad behavior.

What can parents do about this? They can regard sport on television as an opportunity to discuss attitudes and  behavior with their children. When watching sports together, if parents see a player swearing at the referee,  they can get the child's opinion on that behavior and discuss whether a player's skill is more important than  their behavior. Ask what the child thinks the player's contribution to the team is. Point out that no player can  win a team game on their own, so it's important for members to work well together.

Another thing to focus on is what the commentators say. Do they frown on bad behavior from players, think  it's amusing or even consider it's a good thing? What about the officials? If they let players get away with a  clear foul, parents can discuss with children whether this is right and what effect it has on the game. Look too  at the reactions of coaches and managers. Do they accept losing with good grace or scowl and show a bad  attitude? Parents can use this to talk about attitudes to winning and losing and to remind children that both  are part of sport.

However, what children learn from watching sports is by no means all negative and parents should make sure  they accentuate the positives too. They should emphasize to children the high reputation that well-behaved  players have, not just with their teammates but also with spectators and the media. They can focus on the  contribution made by such players during a game, discussing how valuable they are in the team. In the  interviews after a game, point out to a child that the well-behaved sportspeople don't gloat when they win or  sulk when they lose. And parents can stress how well these people conduct themselves in their personal lives  and the good work they do for others when not playing. In other words, parents should get their children to  focus on the positive role models, rather than the antics of the badly behaved but often more publicized  players.

Humans have always been searching for quicker and easier ways to get around. About 10,000 years ago,  we built canoes made from logs of wood, while on land we started riding horses around 4.000 BC. Roughly  500 years later, we invented the wheel, which led to carts and wagons, and at almost the same time, the  Egyptians invented the sailing boat.

Up until the 18th century most people travelled by sailing boat, horse or stagecoach, but in 1769, there was  a major breakthrough when the Scottish inventor James Watt invented the steam engine. In 1783, the French  inventor Claude de Jouffroy used this to build the first steamboat, and in 1804 the Englishman Richard  Trevithick constructed the first steam-powered train. Railways helped carry coal around Britain and were an  important part of the Industrial Revolution.

Another major breakthrough came when Karl Benz built the first working car in 1885. Then, in 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright built the first aeroplane. These two inventions shaped the 20th century. Over time,  cars and plane travel became cheaper so that by the 70s a lot of families owned a car and many were holidaying abroad.

Nowadays, companies are developing self-driving cars and we will soon be able to take trips into space.  The fascinating story of transportation continues and who knows how we'll be getting around in the future.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct  answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.

A survey into the media habits of teenagers in the USA reveals some surprising statistics. The average  teenager spends an incredible eleven hours each day on their mobile phones, computers, games consoles or TVs. That's more hours than they are awake outside school time! How are they able to do this? The answer,  of course, is multitasking.

The results of the survey came as no surprise to fifteen-year-old participant Jake Kendall. He told  researchers that he multitasked every second that he was online. He said that he was completing their survey  at the same time as watching a TV show, chatting to friends online and reading reviews of the latest film  releases. For sixteenyear-old Marisa Sanchez, the survey simply confirmed the facts. She said that she had  watched two hours of TV in the three hours since the end of school, and also researched her homework about  volcanoes, played an online game for two hours, and arranged her weekend plans by texting friends.

Some experts are worried about the survey results. Sylvia de Lupis of the Family Action Institute told our  reporter that teenagers would have difficulties because of their multitasking habits. She added that, as adults,  they would struggle to focus their attention. However, Dr Michael Rich from the Center on Media and Child  Health said that worries about multitasking had become pointless a long time ago, and that high levels of  media use were now a part of young people's environment, 'like the air that they breathe, the water that they  drink and the food that they eat'.

DISABILITY ON TV

Nine official complaints have so far been lodged with the BBC - plus many more blog postings - about 29- year old children's television presenter Cerrie Burnell, who was born with only one hand. Parents have  complained that they cannot let their children watch her because the sight will "probably cause sleep  problems", that she is scaring toddlers, and that they are being forced to discuss the issue of disability with  their offspring before they are ready.

Altogether, it makes you glad that the medieval witch-hunters weren't Internet- enabled. The comments of  course reveal nothing about the children's true feelings and everything about those of the adults involved.  Very young children do not have profound concerns about disability. I worked for several years, on and off,  at a school for physically disabled children and it was never their able-bodied peers who were the problem  when our paths crossed on school outings, but their parents, who kept them pinioned to their sides and made  sure they turned their faces away. If a curious child ever did slip out of his mother's vice-like grip and come  over, he or she would ask a few unabashed questions about what the problem was, want to press buttons on  a few wheelchairs, and accept quite happily the explanations offered. To a young child, it is just another  element of a large and confusing world that they want to find out about, no more fearsome or embarrassing  than any other. No, Burnell's arm is likely only to give parents nightmares. It is they who do not want to  confront disabilities, not now, not at teatime, not ever. To let your toddler be scared every day that Burnell  has hurt herself rather than explain the truth is a failure of parenting, not an imposition by the BBC. And  toddlers are frightened of lots of things. My two-year-old godson is currently terrified by trees ("Too scary!  Too scary!"). His mother isn't out felling all nearby arboreal horrors - she's taking him on extra visits to the  park.

So, it should be here, though increasing exposure to presenters with disabilities is going to be tricky. I can  only think of performer Mat Fraser, who appears occasionally on television, often presenting programmes  about sing with the shortened limbs caused by Thalidomide, and even more occasional screen appearances by  the actor and stand up comedian Francesca Martinez, who has cerebral palsy. Perhaps the most frequently  seen is BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, who has used a wheelchair Gardner since being shot  while reporting from Riyadh five years ago.

But the strength of reaction to Burnell's missing hand shows that she remains something of a pioneer. There  is still a lot of ignorance to get through. Or a lot of ignoramuses to get through to.

Marina Hills High School is fighting pollution in an unusual way. It’s planting trees! In an effort to fight  pollution and help the environment, the Marina Hills Ecology Club offers trees to institutions willing to plant  them on their grounds. Among those that took advantage of the offer was Marina Hills High School. After  consulting with his teachers on where to plant the trees, Principal Max Webb contacted the Ecology Club.

But when the seedlings arrived, Webb had an idea. Instead of planting the young trees in front of the schools,  he thought it would be better to put them behind the school, where the sun gets very hot in the afternoon. "It gets so hot inside the building that the students start to sweat during their afternoon classes," said Webb.  "Now the shade from our trees will bring them some relief."

“There was no argument from the teachers," he added. "When I proposed the idea, everyone said, "Now why  didn't I think of that!"

The relief won't come until the trees grow taller, but the school will not have to wait long because it  requested two species of trees that grow quickly.

“Time is key, and we wanted our trees to get big fast," said Webb. "We were given a wide choice, from shrubs to fruit trees. We requested eucalyptus and willow trees." Webb said he is also looking forward to  finally seeing some wildlife in the school yard at Marina Hills High School.

"If all you have is a grass lawn with no trees, you can't expect the local birds to come and visit," said Webb.  "They have no place to make their nests. Now that will change, and we'll be able to see birds from our  classroom windows."
