Diễn tả hành động không có thực ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai

If + S + simple past (quá khứ đơn), S + past future ( would) + V

Ví dụ: If I were the president, I would build more hospitals (Nếu tôi là tổng thống, tôi sẽ xây nhiều bệnh viện hơn)

Lưu ý:

- Mệnh đề “If” khi được đặt trước mệnh đề chính ta phải dùng dấu phẩy “,”

- Các động từ khuyết thiếu (could, might, had to,…) có thể được dùng để thay thế “would” trong mệnh đề chính

- Đôi khi thì hiện tại đơn có thể được dùng trong mệnh đề chính, khi diễn tả một quy luật, một sự thật hiển nhiên, một điều kiện luôn luôn đúng.
