PHÂN BIỆT EITHER VÀ NEITHER TRONG TIẾNG ANH

1.1. Định nghĩa

“Either”: hoặc cái này hoặc cái kia. “Either” được dùng với động từ ở dạng số ít dạng khẳng định và thường áp dụng cho dạng câu hỏi và câu phủ định.

“Neither”: không cái này cũng không cái kia, ngoài ra nó được xem như là dạng phủ định của “both” và kết hợp với một động từ số ít ở dạng khẳng định.

1.2. Vị trí trong câu

- “Either” đứng ở cuối của câu, sau trợ động từ ở dạng phủ định.

- “Neither” đứng sau từ nối giữa 2 vế câu (thường là “and”), sau đó đến trợ động từ và động từ chính. Hơn nữa, khi dùng “Neither” cần lưu ý vì từ này đã mang nghĩa phủ định nên trợ động từ đứng sau không ở dạng phủ định.

Ví dụ:

Jack doesn't study there, and Laura doesn't either.

= Jack doesn't study there, and neither does Laura.

(Jack không học ở đó, và Laura cũng không.)

1.3. Phân biệt Either và Neither

- “Either” kết hợp trợ động từ thể phủ định (do not/does not/did not). “Neither” kết hợp với động từ thể khẳng định (do/does/did).

Ví dụ:

They didn’t go picnic last weekend, and she didn’t either.

= They didn’t go picnic last weekend, and neither did she.

(Cuối tuần trước họ không đi dã ngoại và cô ấy cũng thế.)

- “Either” nằm cuối của câu và sau trợ động từ thể phủ định. “Neither” đứng sau từ nối giữa 2 vế câu (thường là “and”), sau đó đến trợ động từ và động từ chính.

Ví dụ:

A: She doesn’t like playing sports. (Cô ấy không thích chơi thể thao.)

B: Neither do I. (Tôi cũng không).

Chúng ta cũng có thể nói “Me neither” 

1.4. Cách dùng

a. Either:

- Cấu trúc: Either + Danh từ số ít (Singular noun)

“either” được sử dụng như một từ xác định (determiner) trước danh từ số ít (singular noun)

Ví dụ: I don’t like eating seafood so I don’t want to go to either restaurant. (Tôi không thích ăn hải sản nên tôi không muốn đến một trong hai nhà hàng.)

- Cấu trúc: Either of + determiner + Danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns)

“either of” trước các từ xác định (determiner) và danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns).

Ví dụ: Either of the players will win this football match. (Một trong hai đối thủ sẽ thắng trận bóng này.)

- Cấu trúc: Either of + Object pronoun

Ví dụ: Do either of you have a pen I can borrow? (Có ai trong mọi người có bút cho tôi mượn được không?)

- Dùng “Either” trong câu trả lời ngắn

“either” thường được đặt ở cuối một câu phủ định và chỉ sự đồng ý với sự phủ định mà người nói đề cập tới. Ở đây “either” đồng nghĩa với “too” và “also” tuy nhiên too” và “also” được dùng trong câu khẳng định.

Ví dụ: A: I am not upset with his failure. (A: Tôi không thất vọng với thất bại của anh ấy.)

B: I am not either. (B: Tôi cũng không.)

b. Neither:

- Cấu trúc Neither + Danh từ số ít (Singular noun)

Ở cấu trúc này “neither” đóng vai trò là một từ xác định (determiner) trước danh từ số ít (singular noun).

Ví dụ: Neither student do homework. (Không một học sinh nào làm bài tập về nhà.)

- Cấu trúc: Neither of + determiner + plural nouns (Danh từ số nhiều)

“neither of” trước các từ xác định (determiners): a, an, the, my, his, her, our, their, this, that,… và danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns).

Ví dụ: Neither of students wanted to fail in this exam. (Không một học sinh nào muốn rớt kì kiểm tra này.)

- Cấu trúc: Neither of + Object pronoun

Ví dụ: Neither of us want to lose this football match. (Không ai trong chúng ta muốn thua trong trận bóng đá này.)

- Dùng “Neither” trong câu trả lời ngắn

“Neither”xuất hiện ở câu trả lời ngắn khi một người nói phủ định một điều gì và bạn đồng ý với họ.

Ví dụ: A: I don’t want to play that game. It’s boring. (A: Tôi không muốn chơi game đó. Nó chán lắm.)

   B: Neither do I. (B: Tôi cũng vậy)

1.5. Cấu trúc “Either.. or” và “ Neither… nor”

Either/neither + danh từ + or/nor + danh từ số ít + động từ số ít …

Either/neither + danh từ + or/nor + danh từ số nhiều + động từ số nhiều …

Ví dụ:

- Neither Laura nor her classmates are going to visit London this summer. (Mùa hè này, Laura và bạn cùng lớp không dự định đi đến London.)

- Either Laura or her classmates are going to visit London this summer. (Mùa hè này, Laura hay và các bạn của cô ấy đến London.)
