Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

There has been much debate over the past few years concerning fears that automation will lead to robots replacing human workers on a massive scale.

The increasing use of robotics, computers and artificial intelligence is a reality, but its full implications are far from cut and dried. Some forecasts present the future in a utopian way, claiming that robots will take over the tedious heavy work thus freeing up human time and potential, allowing for more creativity and innovation. At the other end of spectrum are those who foresee an employment apocalypse, predicting that almost fifty percent of all American jobs could vanish within the next few decades. Former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates states that in 20 years robots could be in place in a number of job categories, particularly those at lower end of the scale in terms of skills.

The bottom line is that while the future is always uncertain, robots are a fixture of our society, which is not going to disappear. As with the Industrial Revolution, where machines were utilized in many tasks in place of manual laborers and social upheaval followed, the Digital Revolution is likely to place robots in various jobs. In spite of that, many of today’s jobs were not in existence before the Industrial Revolution, such as those of programmers, engineers and data scientists. This leads other experts to criticize this alarmist approach of robot scare-mongering, which is invariably compared to the 19th-century “Luddites”. This group was textile workers who feared being displaced by machines and resorted to violence, burning down factories and destroying industrial equipment – their rejection of inevitable progress has come to symbolize mindless ignorance.

Needless to say, exactly what new kinds of jobs might exist in the future is difficult to envision at present. Therefore, the crux of the issue is not whether jobs will be lost, but whether the creation of new vacancies will outpace the ever-increasing number of losses and what skills will be required in the future.

It is clearly not all doom and gloom, as demand for employees with skills in data analysis, coding, computer science, artificial intelligence and human-machine interface is rising and will continue to do so. Furthermore, the demand for skills in jobs where humans surpass computers, such as those involving care, creativity and innovative craftsmanship, are likely to increase considerably. Ultimately, the key lies in the adaptation of the workforces, through appropriate education and training, to keep pace with our world’s technological progress.

Câu 38 (TH): What is the main concern associated with technological advances in the workplace?

            A. safety at work                    B. increased unemployment

            D. Technology will have a negative effect in the workplace.

Câu 41 (TH): Why is the example of the Industrial Revolution given?

            D. It resulted in a more violent society.

Câu 42 (TH): What is the modern-day view of the Luddites?

            D. Their actions are inspiring many workers today.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

The first two stages in the development of civilized man were probably the invention of primitive weapons and the discovery of fire, although nobody knows exactly when he acquired the use of the latter.

The origin of language is also obscure. No doubt it began very gradually. Animals have a few cries that serve as signals, but even the highest apes have not been found able to pronounce words, even with the most intensive professional instruction. The superior brain of man is apparently a necessity for the mastering of speech. When man became sufficiently intelligent, we must suppose that he gradually increased the number of cries for different purposes. It was a great day when he discovered that speech could be used for narrative. There are those who think in this respect picture language preceded oral language. A man could draw a picture on the wall of his cave to show in which direction he had gone, or what prey he hoped to catch. Probably picture language and oral language developed side by side. I am inclined to think that language has been the most important single factor in the development of man.

Two important stages came not so long before the dawn of written history. The first was the domestication of animals; the second was agriculture. Agriculture was a step in human progress to which subsequently there was nothing comparable until our own machine age. Agriculture made possible an immense increase in the number of the human species in the regions where it could be successfully practiced. These were, at first, only those in which nature fertilized the soil after each harvest. Agriculture met with violent resistance from the pastoral nomads, but the agricultural way of life prevailed in the end because of the physical comforts it provided.

Another fundamental technical advance was writing, which, like spoken language, developed out of pictures, but as soon as it had reached a certain stage, it was possible to keep records and transmit information to people who were not present when the information was given.

These inventions and discoveries - fire, speech, weapons, domestic animals, agriculture, and writing - made the existence of civilized communities possible. From about 3000 B. C. until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution less than two hundred years ago there was no technical advance comparable to these. During this long period man had time to become accustomed to his technique, and to develop the beliefs and political organizations appropriate to it There was, of course, an immense extension in the area of civilized life. At first it had been confined to the Nile, the Euphrates, the Tigris and the Indus, but at the end of the period in question it covered much the greater part of the inhabitable globe. I do not mean to suggest that there was no technical progress during this long time; there was progress—there were even two inventions of very great importance, namely gunpowder and the mariner’s compass—but neither of these can be compared in their power to such things as speech and writing and agriculture.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

In 16th-century France, the start of the new year was observed on April 1st. It was celebrated much the same way it is today- with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar to the Christian world, and the new year fell on January 18. Some people either didn't hear about the new calendar system or didn't believe the change had really been made. These people continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st. They became the target of jokes. People played tricks on them and called them “April's fools." They sent them on a “fool's errand" or tried to make them believe that something false was true.

Today, some Americans continued the tradition by playing tricks on their friends on the first of April. One well-known trick or practical joke is to put salt in the sugar bowl. Something that college students do is to print false headlines in their college newspaper - such as "FREE BEER IN THE LIBRARY". Most April Fool's jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. 3. Đề số 3

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Naming customs are different around the world. In most cultures, however, people have at least two names: a family name and a given name. Your given name is the name you receive when you are born. Your family name is the name you share with other people in your family. In the United States, the family name is often called the last name, and the given name is often called the first name. However, the order of the two names is not the same everywhere. For example, in many Asian countries, the family name is first and the given name is second. When two people from different cultures meet, sometimes they use the incorrect name. This can cause embarrassment.

Family names can show something about a family's early history. The origin of many English family names is a place, like London, or a job, such as Farmer or Shoemaker. A long time ago, these families probably worked as farmers or shoemakers. Swedish and Danish family names often mean son of. For example, Johansson means son of Johan. In South Korea, there are only about 250 family names. These names go back hundreds of years to very old clans. About half of all Koreans have one of the three most common family names - Kim, Park, or Lee.

There is generally no choice about a family name, but there is much more choice about given names. Parents choose their child's name for many different reasons. They may select a name that sounds beautiful or means something special. These names may have meanings like peace or happiness. In some cultures, there may be a connection between children's names and when or how they were born. For example, a Yoruba child in Nigeria might have a name like Sunday or Born on a Sunny Day. In some countries, parents may pay money to a professional baby namer to help them find a good name. They want to find a name that will be lucky for their child.

4. Đề số 4

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Ranked as the number one beverage consumed worldwide, tea takes the lead over coffee in both popularity and production with more than 5 million metric tons of tea produced annually. Although much of this tea is consumed in Asian, European, and African countries, the United States drinks its fair share. According to estimates by the Tea Council of the United States, tea is enjoyed by no less than half of the U.S. population on any given day. Black tea or green tea – iced, spiced, or instant – tea drinking has spurred a billion-dollar business with major tea producers in Africa and South America and throughout Asia.

Tea is made from the leaves of an evergreen plant, Camellia saneness, which grows tall and lush in tropical regions. On tea plantation, the plant is kept trimmed to approximately four feet high and as new buds called flush appear, they are plucked off by hand. Even in today's world of modern agricultural machinery, hand harvesting continues to be the preferred method. Ideally, only the top two leaves and a bud should be picked. This new growth produces the highest quality tea.

After being harvested, tea leaves are laid out on long drying racks, called withering racks, for 18 to 20 hours. During this process, the tea softens and becomes limp. Next, depending on the type of tea being produced, the leaves may be crushed or chopped to release flavor, and then fermented under controlled conditions of heat and humidity. For green tea, the whole leaves are often steamed to retain their green color, and the fermentation process is skipped. Producing black teas requires fermentation during which the tea leaves begin to darken. After fermentation, black tea is dried in vats to produce its rich brown or black color.

No one knows when or how tea became popular, but legend has it that tea as a beverage was discovered in 2737 B.C. by Emperor Shen Nung of China when leaves from a Camellia dropped into his drinking water as it was boiling over a fire. As the story goes, Emperor Shen Nung drank the resulting liquid and proclaimed the drink to be most nourishing and refreshing. Though this account cannot be documented, it is thought that tea drinking probably originated in China and spread to other parts of Asia, then to Europe, and ultimately to America colonies around 1650.

With about half the caffeine content as coffee, tea is often chosen by those who want to reduce, but not necessarily eliminate their caffeine intake. Some people find that tea is less acidic than coffee and therefore easier on the stomach. Others have become interested in tea drinking since the National Cancer Institute published its findings on the antioxidant properties of tea. But whether tea is enjoyed for its perceived health benefits, its flavor, or as a social drink, teacups continue to be filled daily with the world's most popular beverage.
