Twenty-five students from Walling School are currently living in France. They are there for three months as part of a living-abroad project. The 16- and 17-year-old students are living with French families and attending a French school. Most of the students have taken French language classes for 3 or 4 years and are finally getting on opportunity to use their French.
Not only are students learning a new language, but they are learning about a new culture, too. Students have been particularly surprised about the French attitude towards food. “They won't leave anything on their plate” says Vanessa Athol. “They aren't wasteful at all”. Vanessa has vowed to be more careful with waste when returning to the United States.
The group's chaperone, Mrs. Smith, has been pleased with the students' acquisition of language. “Even the most timid are trying their best to speak. The students are learning a lot. I'm very impressed,” she said. Mrs. Smith added that she thinks living with a French family makes a difference because students are forced to speak French. “We are all very grateful to the French families who are hosting us.”
The French families are happy to have the students, as they are getting to learn about American culture. Both groups will be celebrating the exchange at a large potluck dinner at the end of the stay. There will be a slide show of memories and the students will speak about their experiences. Currently, the American students are periodically posting pictures and student essays on the Walling School website. “Living in France in an experience I'll never forget,” writes student Tina Davis. “I know I'll want to eat these croissants and this Camembert for the rest of my life!”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
When you're sleepy, stressed or have had a few drinks, you're not in the best position to drive - or even make that decision. But automated cars could soon determine whether or not you can drive for you. In Europe, more than 25,000 people lose their lives on the road every year, while another 135,000 are seriously injured. And the main culprits are speed, alcohol or drug driving, non-use of seat belts, distraction, and fatigue.
The type of automated cars on the road today provide steering, brake and acceleration support while the driver is still at the wheel and constantly monitors the driving. These are known as level two on the car autonomy scale, but cars could reach up to level five on the six-level scale in the future - becoming a completely driverless car. However, there is still a long way to go and we have to take it step-by-step, says Dr. Anna Anund from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute.
She and her team are developing a sensor-based system as part of a project to move towards level three, in which the driver can rest and would only be expected to drive when the car requests it. The system would also automatically transfer control between vehicle and driver to ensure road safety, especially when the driver is sleepy, stressed, distracted or anxious. It also uses many types of sensors to keep tabs on the drivers' state, such as eye trackers and sensors to measure heart rate and changes in voice or face images, most of which are on the vehicle's dashboard, wheel or seat.
But all of this is still not enough. Dr. Anund also notes that each person varies and reacts differently in both normal and impairment states, such as sleepiness, and therefore the system should work on an individual level. To measure heart rate variability accurately, for example, information such as age and gender should be included or the initial state of the driver should be used as a reference. “It's important to develop systems where your individual preferences and behaviours are incorporated, so we will also focus on human-computer interaction,” she said.
Question 44. The word culprits in paragraph 1 can be best replaced by ______.
A. benefits B. effects C. drawbacks D. causes
Question 45. Which of the following is TRUE about the system developed by Dr. Anund's team?
A. It requests to take control if a driver is distracted or stressed.

D. It detects when a driver is sleepy and help them stay awake.
Question 46. What does the passage mostly concern?
A. The development of a new self-driving car system.

D. The reasons why more people prefer driverless cars.
Question 47. The word It in paragraph 3 refers to ______.

D. sensors will be inaccurate without any personal information

GET READY IN FIVE MINUTES
Does this sound like your life? Do you get the feeling that everything is accelerating? Not only are activities getting significantly quicker, but our assumptions are changing, too.
Take exercise: we used to think that the longer we spent on, say, a pleasurable walk in the countryside, the more good it did us. Not anymore. The new (34) _______ is for HIIT – short for High-Intensity Interval Training - (35) _______ just twelve minutes of very intense activity is supposed to be every bit as beneficial as conventional exercise. Get on that rowing machine and keep it short and sharp! It’s supposed to get you fitter in a considerably shorter period of time than conventional exercise routines. Advocates of HIIT training claim that it can burn fat up to 50% more effectively than low-intensity exercise. They also maintain that it speeds up metabolism and so makes you burn more calories throughout the day. However, some recent research would appear to (36) ______ these claims.
(37) _______ have our personalities changed, too? Smartphones allow us to access information in no time at all. Research demonstrates that 80% of people will not wait more than 30 seconds for a video to load. A recent survey suggests we now walk 10% faster than we did ten years ago. It seems we even start to get annoyed after five seconds waiting for the car in front of us to start moving when the traffic light turns green. Overtime, we come to expect (38)_____ to be available infinitely more quickly than in the past. We have far less patience. We’ve forgotten how to slow down. Welcome to modern life.

It’s Friday’s night in Singapore and, once again, Madeline Tan (28) doesn’t have a date. Like many women she feels ready to settle down as she approaches thirty. She has experienced more than a little family pressure about still being single at her age. And it is not only her family but also her government who are keen for her to marry and reproduce.
Living in one of the world’s most successful economies, Madeline has a good education and the pick of jobs. Her salary as a radio executive means she can drive a luxury car and go shopping. Singapore’s government believes that, to ensure continuous prosperity, future generations must become more intelligent. And it is concerned that female graduates – ideal for breeding this super-race – are staying single and childless. Singapore’s men, on the other hand, are marrying less educated women. So, the government has launched a campaign to encourage the ‘right’ couples to get together.
Putting off marriage and parenthood is becoming more common in all industrialized nations. This is partly because high pressure jobs leave little time for socializing and meeting potential partners. In Singapore, the problem is made worse by cultural traditions. The sexes are not encouraged to mix during childhood or to date until after university.
Research scientists Kee-Chuan Goh (29) has never had a girlfriend. “There’s a first time for everything.”, he says. Like Madeline he has signed up with the SDU (Social Development Unit), the government’s very own dating agency. It is open only to graduates, who sign up for five years, although most members are married within three.
Government-sponsored ads on prime-time TV aim to get the message across. In one, a young man sits on a park bench, sighing, “Where is my dream girl?” At the other end, a girl stares into space thinking, “Where is the man of my dreams?” They fail to notice each other and wander off, lonely. A voice-over warns “Why not reality? You could wait a lifetime for a dream.”

A team of Russian scientists has challenged the theory that the woolly mammoths became extinct 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. The scientists have reported that the beasts may have survived until 2000 B.C. on an island off the coast of Siberia, where researchers uncovered 29 fossilized woolly mammoth teeth ranging in age from 4,000 to 7,000 years. The question to be asked now is, how did these prehistoric pachyderms survive in their island environment? One possibility is that they adapted to their confined surroundings by decreasing their bulk. This theory is based on their smaller tooth size, which has led scientists to believe that they were only 6 feet tall at the shoulder compared with 10 feet of their full-sized counterpart. But would this be enough to enable them to survive thousands of years beyond that of other mammoths? Researchers are still working to uncover the reasons for this isolated group's belated disappearance.

Read the following passage and choose A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions
In this era of increased global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must begin to put a greater priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are a number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost- effective and earth - friendly. Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power.
Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet the needs of worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight to electricity. In the us alone, more than 100, 000 homes are equipped with solar electric systems in the form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the world, including many developing countries, the use of solar system is growing steadily.
Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which produces electricity. Geothermal energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel resources and as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A prime example of effective geothermal use in Iceland, a region of high geothermal activity where there are over 80 percent of private homes, are heated by geothermal power.
Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and use of alternative energy on global scale.
