REASONS TO NOT HIT YOUR KIDS

The practice of hitting children teaches them to become hitters themselves. Extensive research data is now available to support the direct correlation ....26.... corporal punishment in childhood and violent behavior in the teenage and adult years. Virtually, all of the most dangerous criminals ....27.... regularly threatened and punished in childhood. Punishment gives the message that "might make right," that it is okay to hurt someone smaller and less powerful than you are. The child then feels it is appropriate to mistreat younger or smaller children, and when he becomes an adult, feels little ....28.... for those less fortunate or powerful than he is, and fears those who are more so. Thus it is difficult for him to find ....29.... friendships. Children learn best through parental modeling. Punishment gives the message that hitting is an appropriate way to express one's feelings and to solve problems. If the child rarely sees the parents handle anger and solve problems in a creative and positive way, he can never learn how ....30.... that himself. Thus inadequate parenting continues into the next generation.

TEXAS

A Texas middle school is under fire after students say they have been banned from speaking Spanish in class. The students say their principal announced the rule last month over the intercom. Inside the walls of Hemptead Middle School, a language controversy is brewing. “There's one teacher that said, “If you speak Spanish in my class, I'm gonna write you up,” 8th grader Tiffani Resurez says. Four students say their principal's announcement - banning them from speaking Spanish in class - has given teachers and fellow students a hall pass to discriminate. “She was like, „No speaking Spanish.' She told me that. I was like, “That's my first language.’ She said, „Well, you can get out," fellow classmate Yedhany Gallegos says. A letter sent home by the superintendent says, "Neither the district nor any campus has any policy prohibiting the speaking of Spanish." The four students feel that the statement from the superintendent has not been made entirely clear that their school. "People don't want to speak it anymore and don't want to get caught speaking it because they're going to get into trouble," 6th grader Kiara Lozano says. Parents, like Cynthia Zamora, believe the school is not getting to the root of the problem. She wants to know why the "No Spanish" announcement was ever made in the first place. "I was very surprised that she would even go to such lengths," Zamora says. Many students at the school grew up speaking Spanish at home, and they say it often comes as second nature when they're talking to each other at school. “I'm not scared. I'm gonna keep speaking language. That's my first language, and I'm gonna keep doing it," Lozano said. The principal has been placed on paid administrative leave while the district investigates. A spokeswoman for Hempstead Inder School District has released a statement saying, in part, “The district is committed to efficiently and effectively resolving this matter with as little disruption to our students and their learning environment as possible."

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

A newborn baby can see, hear and feel. By the age of five, a child can talk, ride a bike and invent imaginary friends. How does this development happen? We don't understand the way language, thinking and planning develop very well. Now scientists are using new technology to ‘see’ into children's brains. And they are discovering new information about the way a baby's brain develops.

A study in 2010 showed that the experiences a child has in their first few years affect the development of the brain. It showed that children who received more attention often had higher IQs. The brain of a newborn baby has nearly a hundred billion neurons. This is the same number as an adult's brain. As they grow, a baby receives information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. This information creates connections between different parts of the brain. At the age of three, there are a hundred trillion connections.

One experiment looked at images of babies' brains while they were listening to different sounds. The sounds were in different sequences. For example, one sequence was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern 'A-B-B'. Another sequence was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern 'A-B-C'. The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during A-B-B' patterns. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. This experiment is interesting because sequences of words are important to grammar and meaning. Compare two sentences with the same words in a different order: John killed the bear' is very different from 'The bear killed John.' So babies are starting to learn grammatical rules from the beginning of life.

Researchers also know that babies need to hear a lot of language in order to understand grammar rules. But there is a big difference between listening to television, audio books or the internet, and interacting with people. One study compared two groups of nine-month-old American babies. One group watched videos of Mandarin Chinese sounds. In the other group, people spoke the same sounds to the babies. The test results showed that the second group could recognise different sounds, however the first group learned nothing. The scientist, Patricia Kuhl, said this result was very surprising. It suggests that social experience is essential to successful brain development in babies.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions from 34 to 38.

We have been making cheese for millennia, but researchers are only now getting to grips with how bacteria, fungi and viruses combine to create its characteristic flavours and textures. When it comes to finding new and exotic species, there is no need to travel to the rainforest or trawl the deep ocean. Just open your fridge. The cheeses in there contain a wealth of surprises, if you look closely enough.

Although cheese production began at least 7000 years ago, we are only just beginning to understand what is really going on in this complex ecosystem that we delight in devouring. “Cheese is a fascinating ecological niche,” says Paul Cotter, a microbiologist at food and agricultural research body Teagasc who is based in Cork, Ireland. New work on the cheese microbiome is revealing a riot behind the rind, with complex interactions between a diverse array of bacteria, moulds and yeasts helping to create characteristic flavours and textures. “There are a lot of microbes that we’re eating every day on some of our favourite cheeses, and we know incredibly little about what they’re doing to drive the flavour of those cheeses,” says Benjamin Wolfe at Tufts University in Massachusetts. Understanding this better will not only help control the flavours of existing cheeses, but also help us develop tasty new ones.

Here’s a tour of some of the surprises hidden in your cheeseboard. Cheeses are dominated by bacteria that digest the main sugar in milk, lactose, and turn it into an acid. But they are also home to a menagerie of other microbes that develop as cheese matures, and exactly how many organisms cheese contains is only just being revealed. Studies using gene-sequencing technologies keep finding new bacteria, some previously unknown to science.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions from 39 to 45.

When corals are mentioned, many people think of rock-life forms in the sea filled with colorful fish.

But corals are made up of hundreds of thousands of small organisms which live and feed like any other sea life. For the past five years, researchers in Hawaii and Australia have been engineering corals inside a lab to see if they could better resist the effects of climate change. They say it is now time to see how their creations perform in nature. The scientists say climate change linked to human causes has led to warming oceans that can harm sea life. They say if the more heat-resistant corals they developed do well in the ocean, the method can be used to help save suffering and dying reefs.

The team tested three methods for making corals that would be strong and healthy in nature. One was the method of selective breeding. This method involves scientists choosing parents with desirable characteristics for reproductive purposes. A second method subjected the corals to increasing temperatures to condition them to be able to survive in warm ocean environments. The third involved making changes to the algae that provide corals with necessary nutrients. The leader of the project, University of Hawaii researcher Kira Hughes, said all the methods proved successful in the lab. She told The Associated Press that some scientists might worry that such methods go against the natural processes of nature. But with the planet continuing to warm more and more, she does not see any better options.

“We have to intervene in order to make a change for coral reefs to survive into the future,” Hughes said. When ocean temperatures rise, corals release algae that supplies nutrients and gives them color. This causes them to turn white, a process called bleaching. When this happens, corals can quickly become sick and die. But for years, scientists have been observing corals that have survived bleaching, even when others have died on the same reef. They are now centering on those healthy survivors and hoping to further increase their resistance to heat. Those corals were used as the parents for the newly created kinds.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions from 22 to 28.

Have you ever entered a tropical rainforest? It's a special, dark place completely different from anywhere else. A rainforest is a place where the trees grow very tall. Millions of kinds of animals, insects, and plants live in the rainforest. It is hot and humid in a rainforest. It rains a lot in the rainforest, but sometimes you don't know it's raining. The trees grow so closely together that rain doesn't always reach the ground.

Rainforests make up only a small part of the Earth's surface, about six percent. They are found in tropical parts of the world. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon in South America. The Amazon covers 1.2 billion acres, or almost five million square kilometers. The second largest rainforest is in Western Africa.

There are also rainforests in Central America, Southeast Asia, Northeastern Australia, and the Pacific Islands. Rainforests provide us with many things. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is called the "lungs of our planet" because it produces twenty percent of the world's oxygen. One fifth of the world's fresh water is also found in the Amazon Rainforest. Furthermore, one half of the world's species of animals, plants, and insects live in the Earth's rainforests. Eighty percent of the food we cat first grew in the rainforest. For example, pineapples, bananas, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, chocolate, coffee, and sugar all came from rainforests. Twenty-five percent of the drugs we take when we are sick are made of plants that grow only in rainforests. Some of these drugs are even used to fight and cure cancer. With all the good things we get from rainforests, it's surprising to find that we are destroying our rainforests. In fact, 1.5 acres, or 6,000 square meters, of rainforest disappear every second. The forests are being cut down to make fields for cows, to harvest the plants, and to clear land for farms. Along with losing countless valuable species, the destruction of rainforests creates many problems worldwide. Destruction of rainforests results in more pollution, less rain, and less oxygen for the world.

The generation gap that was so in evidence during the 60s has resurfaced, but it is not the disruptive force  that it was during the Vietnam era, a 2009 study suggests. The Pew Research Center study found that 79% of  Americans see major differences between younger and older adults in the way they look at the world. In  1969, a Gallup Poll found that a smaller percentage, 74%, perceived major differences.

Today, however, although more Americans see generational differences, most do not see them as divisive.  That is partly because of the areas of difference. The top areas of disagreement between young and old,  according to the Pew Research Study, are the use of technology and taste in music. Grandparents are likely to  have observed these differences in their grandchildren who are tweens, teens, and young adults.

If large differences between the generations exist, why don't they spawn conflict? The answer is twofold. First, the two largest areas of difference—technology and music—are less emotionally charged than political  issues. The older generation is likely to be proud of the younger generation's prowess in technology rather  than to view it as a problem. As for the musical differences, each generation wants its own style of music,  and the older generation generally can relate to that desire.

Second, in the other areas of difference, the younger generation tends to regard the older generation as  superior to their own generation clearly a difference from the 1960s with its rallying cry of "Don't trust  anyone over thirty." According to the Pew study, all generations regard older Americans as superior in moral  values, work ethic and respect for others.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct  answer to each of the questions from 38 to 44.

Many people see large urban cities as a wonder of human imagination and creativity. They represent how far  the human population has come in terms of community development. Many positive things come from  urbanization, but there are also negatives. This article will discuss and present data on the implications of  urbanization on the physical health of humans living in these large urban areas.

As it would be expected, developing countries tend to see more negative physical health effects than modern  countries in regard to urbanization. One example of a developing country experiencing these problems is  China. China is a country that in the past 30-40 years went from being an agrarian based society to a  significant industrialized country. This industrialization has in effect caused the need for more centralized  cities, centralized meaning having lots of jobs and living spaces within a close proximity. This is what is  known as urbanization. In most recent decades, since China's change to being more of an industrial based  economy, the country has experienced record high numbers of people migrating within its borders. In effect,  the number of cities with over 500,000 people has more than doubled. These migrations are typically of  people from rural areas of China moving to the new urban areas. Due to this large influx in the urban

population, there are many possibilities for health challenges among these people.

One very common and fairly obvious negative aspect of highly congested urban areas is air pollution. Air  pollution is defined as any harmful substance being suspended in the air. This could include particulate  matter, most commonly attributed to industrial plants and refineries waste, or chemicals like CO2 or Methane  (which are also products of plants and refineries as well as cars and other modes of transportation). Due to a  vast number of people in these urbanized cities, the air pollution is known to be very extreme. These  conditions can lead to many different health problems such as: Asthma, cardiovascular problems or disease,  and different types of cancer (most commonly lung cancer). When exposed to these conditions for a  prolonged period of time, one can experience even more detrimental health effects like: the acceleration of  aging, loss of lung capacity and health, being more susceptible to respiratory diseases, and a shortened life  span.

Another way that urbanization affects the populations' health is people's change in diet. For instance, urban  cities tend to have lots of accessible, quick, and easy to get food. This food is also more than likely not as  high quality as well as contains a large amount of sodium and sugar. Because this food is so accessible,  people tend to cat it more. This increase in consumption of low quality food can then lead to diabetes,  hypertension, heart disease, obesity, or many other health conditions.
