• diễn tả sự chọn lựa

Ex: Do you study Maths or Chemistry?

Does he live in the city centre or in the suburbs?

• OR ELSE ( nếu không): diễn tả điều kiện

Ex: You hurry or (else) you’ll be late for the bus?

a.3.BUT

• nối hai ý tương phản nhau

Ex: He’s fat but his brother isn’t.
That man is famous but humble.

a.4. SO

• diễn tả hậu quả

Ex: He’s busy, so he can’t help you.

The test was easy, so most of the pupils could do it.

a.5. THEREFORE – HOWEVER

• THEREFORE (do đó, vì thế): đồng nghĩa với so, chỉ hậu quả

Ex: He’s busy; therefore he can’t help you.

He’s at a meeting now; therefore he can’t answer your phone.

He’s busy. Therefore he can’t help you.

He’s busy. He, therefore, can’t help you.

Chú ỷ: THEREFORE có thể theo sau dấu phẩy (,)(a comma), dấu chấm phẩy(;)(a semi-colon) hoặc dấu chấm câu (a period hoặc sau chủ từ.)

HOWEVER (tuy nhiên): diễn tả sự tương phản, đồng nghĩa với BUT nhưng luôn luôn nối liền hai mệnh đề.

Ex: He’s over seventy; however, he’s still active.

It’s raining hard; the game is , however, going on.

Động từ kép (Phrasal verbs) là động từ được cấu tạo bởi một động từ (a verb) với một tiểu từ (a particle) hay một giới từ (a preposition) hay cả hai (tiểu từ + giới từ) : give up, turn on , look after, get along with. . Động từ kép được chia làm hai loại :

b.1. Động từ kép có thể phản cách (separable phrasal verbs) : give up, turn on, try on, put on  

• Túc từ là danh từ có thể đứng trước hoặc sau tiểu từ.
• S + V + tiểu từ + túc từ.
  • You should turn off the lights before leaving home.
  • He’s trying on a jacket.
• S+ V + túc từ + tiểu từ.
  • He’s trying a jacket on.
  • He gave smoking up.
• Túc từ là đại  từ nhân xưng: luôn luôn đứng giữa động từ và tiểu từ.
  • The light is on. Turn it off.
  • Here’re the shoes. Try them on.

b.2. Động từ không thể phản cách ( Unseparable phrasal verbs): túc từ luôn luôn đứng sau giới từ.

Ex: You should look after your old parents.

He looks forward to his brother’s letter.

• Suggest + gerund + O/A.
  • I suggest going swimming.
  • Tom suggested playing badminton.
• S + suggest + that + S + should + V + O/A.
  • They suggest that everyone should save electricity.
  • People suggested that the government should improve the education system.

Chú ý:

• Từ “THAT” ở mẫu câu này không được bỏ.
• Mệnh đề theo sau “suggest” có thể ở thì present subjunctive (hiện tại giả định / bàng thái)
  • The doctor suggested that he drink a lot of lemonade.
  • The teacher suggests that Bill do a lot of exercises.

Ghi nhớ: Thì hiện tại giả định / bàng thái có dạng ẩn ở dạng đơn giản "I" gốc hoặc với: “I think we should + V + O/A.” (Tôi nghĩ chúng ta nên .. .’)

Ex: I think we should collect old clothes.

I think we should not permit children to ride motorbike.
