A. Cách sử dụng của May và Might trong Tiếng Anh
Ví dụ tình huống:
- You are looking for Bob. Nobody is sure where he is but you get some suggestions.
Bạn đang tìm Bob. Không ai chắc chắn anh ấy đang ở đâu nhưng bạn có một vài gợi ý.
You: Where's Bob?
Bob đang ở đâu?
He maybe in his office. (= Có lẽ anh ấy đang ở trong văn phòng của anh ấy.)
He might be having lunch. (= Có lẽ anh ấy đang dùng cơm trưa)
Ask Ann. She might know. (= Hỏi Ann xem. Có lẽ cô ấy biết.)
Chúng ta sử dụng may hay might để nói về điều gì đó có khả năng xảy ra. Bạn có thể sử dụng may hay might đều được.
Ví dụ:
- It may be true. hoặc It might be true. (=perhaps it is true).
Điều đó có thể đúng.
- She might know hoặc she may know.
Có thể cô ấy biết.
Hình thức phủ định của may là may not.
Hình thức phủ định của might là might not hay mightn't.
Cấu trúc
B. Sử dụng may have (done) hay might have (done) cho thì quá khứ
Ví dụ:
1/ A: I wonder why Kay didn't answer the phone.
Tôi không hiểu tại sao Kay lại không trả lời chuông cửa.
B: She may have been asleep. (=perhaps she was asleep)
Có lẽ cô ấy đang ngủ say.
2/ A: I can't find my bag anywhere.
Tôi không thể tìm thấy cái túi ở đâu cả.
B: You might have left it in the shop. (= perhaps you left it in the shop)
Có thể bạn đã quên nó ở cửa hàng rồi.
3/ A: I was surprised that Sarah wasn't at the meeting.
Tôi ngạc nhiên vì Sarah đã không đến dự buổi họp.
B: She might not have known about it. (perhaps she didn't know)
Có lẽ cô ấy không biết về cuộc họp.
4/ A: I wonder why Colin was in such a bad mood yesterday.
Tôi tự hỏi tại sao hôm qua Colin lại có tâm trạng buồn như vậy.
B: He may not have been feeling well. (=perhaps he wasn't feeling well)
Có lẽ anh ấy đã không cảm thấy khỏe.
