a. Introducing the topic

Đầu tiên, chúng ta cần xác định Chủ đề của đề bài là gì? Neu chủ đề xác định là “Computers” thì quá rộng, sẽ rất mất công để giới hạn chủ đề ở các câu sau, như vậy mở bài sẽ dài không cần thiết. Vậy chủ đề có thể là: “The changes computers have on our lives”. Như vậy, câu đầu tiên của mở bài bạn có thể viết:

The changes computers have on our lives has become a source of controversy over the years.

Without a doubt, computers have changed the way people live.

b. Giving background information and Narrowing the topic

Ở đây, giới hạn lại topic đã đưa ra (The changes computers have on our lives). Hướng giới hạn ở đây bạn dựa vào đề bài: This change has improved the way people live. Đó là sự đánh giá (tốt, xấu, tích cực, tiêu cực) về những thay đổi mà máy tính tạo nên cho đời sống con người. Như vậy, đề bài sẽ được giới hạn về vấn đề “Evaluating the quality of those changes”

Từ đó, câu văn tiếp theo có thể là:

Evaluating the quality of those changes is less clear and is subject to individual opinions and attitudes.

Ở đây, bạn trực tiếp đưa ra quan điểm của mình, tức là hoặc đồng ý, hoặc không đồng ý, hoặc chỉ một phần đồng ý. Ở đây có lẽ cách chọn khôn ngoan nhất là “partly agree/disagree”. Tức là chỉ đồng ý/không đồng ý một phần, vì rõ ràng tác động của máy tính lên đời sống con người vừa có những mặt tích cực vừa có những mặt tiêu cực.

Với đề bài này, mình sẽ chọn cách tiếp cận đó là: Sự tác động của máy tính chủ yếu là tích cực; tuy nhiên cũng có một số vấn đề đáng quan tâm. Từ đó, câu văn cuối cùng của mở bài có thể là:

“Based on my experiences and observations, I think that, on the balance, computers have improved most people’s lives; however, the benefits should be seen in light of a few substantial problems”

Tuy nhiên, nếu bạn chọn hướng thứ hai: Máy tính chủ yếu tác động tiêu cực lên cuộc sống con người; tuy nhiên, cũng có những tác động tích cực cần chú ý, bạn có thể viết:

“Based on my experiences and observations, I think that, on the balance, computers have harm most people’s lives; however, the drawbacks should be seen in light of a few substantial benefit”

Chú ý: Bạn có thể thấy cách viết ở đây rất linh hoạt, sử dụng hiệu quả vốn từ ngữ, cấu trúc câu. Ví dụ:

Như vậy, bạn đã có một mở bài hoàn chỉnh:

Ở phần mở bài, chúng ta đã chọn quan điểm: Tác động của máy tình lên đời sống chủ yếu là tích cực, tuy nhiên cũng có một số tác động tiêu cực. Vì thế, ở thân bài, người viết sẽ tập trung phân tích những khía cạnh tích cực mà máy tính tác động lên cuộc sống con người nhưng không quên phân tích cả những khía cạnh tiêu cực. Như thế, ta có thể chia thân bài ra làm ba đoạn: 2 đoạn cho những tác động tích cực và 1 đoạn cho những tác động tiêu cực. Phần tác động tiêu cực nên viết gọn vì đây không phải trọng tâm của bài.

Trước khi đi vào bài viết cụ thể, chúng ta đã phải vạch ý (brainstorm) cho những gì viết trong thân bài. Có thể giải quyết với một số gợi ý:

Positive changes:

Sau đây là ba đoạn văn trong phần thân bài. Đoạn một và hai nói về những tác động tích cực, đoạn ba nói về tác động tiêu cực. Trong các đoạn văn mình đã đánh dấu cấu trúc của một đoạn thân bài như đã trao đổi với các bạn ở những bài viết trước.

First Body Paragraph:

Third body paragraph:

(Topic sentence) Some observers might say this all sounds great, yet there are downsides to the computer revolution that lessen some of the appeal of these benefits, if only slightly. (Supporting idea 1) The most prominent is physical problems. (Expanding 1) If people spend so much time at their computers, they do not get enough exercise, which can lead to numerous health problems. (Supporting idea 2) Psychollogically , with too much time spent sitting in front of computers, they do not develop healthy interpersonal skills. (Example 2) Increases in depression and violence are two visible effects of this problem.

Conclusion

(Summary) It is far from clear where the changes computers have brought to our lives will eventually take us. Like all new technology, computers bring mixed blessings to peole's everyday lives. (Opinion) At present, I believe the benefits outweigh the negative consequences.

Đoạn văn có những từ khó hiểu, có thể tạm dịch: Chúng ta khó có thể biết những thay đổi mà máy tính đem đến cuộc sống sẽ đưa ta tới đâu. Giống như tất cả những công nghệ mới, những tác động của máy tính rất phức tạp, cả tích cực lẫn tiêu cực. Nhưng ở thời điểm này, tôi tin rằng những lợi ích vượt xa những hạn chế mà máy tính đã đem lại.

Đoạn kết theo đúng những yêu cầu của một kết bài, vừa tóm tắt phần nội dung ở thân bài vừa khẳng định lại quan điểm đã nêu ở mở bài, đồng thời tạo cảm giác hoàn chỉnh cho một bài viết.

2.1. Viết đoạn văn về ngày Tết bằng tiếng Anh có dịch

Lunar New Year Festival often falls between late January and early February; it is among the most important holidays in Vietnam. Officially, the festival includes the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day in Lunar Calendar; however, Vietnamese people often spend nearly a month celebrating this special event. Tet Holiday gets its beginning marked with the first day in the Lunar Year; however, its preparation starts long before that. It thought that each year on this day, these Gods go to heaven to tell Jade Emperor about all activities of households on earth. After that, till the third day or even the fourth day of Tet, individuals meet relatives, friends, and colleagues, wishing them all kinds of good things like happiness, health, and success.

2.2. Write about your hobby

Most of my friends like to stay inside to play video games, read books or watch TV, but I have a good hobby of going outside and playing sports. I play many different sports in my free time; some of them are soccer, swimming, volleyball and basketball. Sometimes I also ride the bikes or do board skating with my cousin in the park. In my opinion, doing sport is one of the rare hobbies that actually have good impacts on me. I am taller than most of my classmates thanks to swimming and basketball lessons that I take during summer time. My muscles are even stronger than my older brother, and I can last longer than most other people in any sport competition. Sports bring me a lot of benefits, and they are also fun things to do at the same time. Both of my physical and mental health become better after I play sports, so it can be considered as the best things to do in my free time. Sports are like a part of my life besides other activities, and I will continue to play sports till I am too weak for them.

Each person must have the ideal partner for themselves. For me, my ideal partner is a good heart, honesty, and respect parents, hardworking, and educated. Moreover, she is also a pretty and attractive woman.

Firstly, I love my ideal partner very much because she is enough clever to keep my heart cheerful and always helps me when I need her, especially in my studies.

Besides that, my girlfriend is good heart and responsible when she always reminds me that education is very important because that is what determines our future.

2.4. Write about your favorite subject at school

When going to school, there are many subjects; however I still like literature the most. First, literature plays an important role in both education and daily life. Literature is not limit to a subject to be learnt at school. Furthermore, this subject teaches human about several aspects of life. From the very first step, student learns to write, read as well as describe things and people. Moreover, literature teaches one to be a responsible citizen and likeable personality. Literature is more than a subject, it’s an art and it can be applied directly into life such as: journalism, editor. People are not born to learn this unique subject, it needs long time to exercise to master. Besides, when learning literature people not only know more works of art but also understand culture, tradition of each country. Literature is the mirror reflecting human and their lifestyle. Studying literature means learning the way to love and live a true life. All in all, with great benefits of literature, it is necessary for each society especially developing countries.

2.5. Write about your favorite sport

I love a quite strange sport for everyone, and it is ping pong. Not many people in Vietnam who are interested in ping pong, and it is also hard to find a place to actually have enough equipment to play it. Ping pong, or it also known as table tennis, consists of two or four players hitting a lightweight ball back and forth on a table. The table is divided in two halves by a net, and it marks the playing zone of each team. The basic rule for amateurs is pretty simple as players need to let the ball touch their side of the table one time before bouncing back. They then hit the ball back to their opponent’s side with a small paddle, and this time the ball also need to touch the other side of the table as well. A point is counted when a player fail to return back the ball, let it touch the net, or make it land outside of the table. Since it is played on a table, so the area is not big enough for us to wait and think about the next move. Therefore, we need to play it with fast reactions and nonstop motions. We only have one second to act the next step right after hitting the ball, and it does not take much time to complete a set. In a competition, and match usually consists of five or seven sets, and the first one to score 11 points wins a set. Many people do not take this sport serious, but I think it is a very good sport to train both of our physical and mental health as we need to be tough and have quick reactions at the same time.

2.6. Write about a person you love most

My mother is a person I admire most. She devoted a lot of time and energy to the upbringing of my two brothers and I. Despite working hard, she always made time to teach us many useful things which are necessary and important in our later lives. Moreover, she is a good role model for me to follow. She always tries to get on well with people who live next door and help everyone when they are in difficulties, so most of them respect and love her. I admire and look up to my mother because she not only brings me up well but also stands by me and gives some help if necessary. For example, when I encounter some difficulties, she will give me some precious advice to help me solve those problems. She has a major influence on me and I hope that I will inherit some of her traits.

2.7. Write about the subject you hate most at school

Back in high school, the subject that I really hated was literature. I did not understand why others could write easily but I could not. Honestly, I really admired my friends because they always wrote long essays, and theirs all were full of feelings. When I look back now, I can figure out some reasons. First of all, I belonged to natural science. That was why I always got five scores for literature but maximum ones for math. The second reason was also the most critical factor that impacted negatively on my writing skill. I remember that I had to write unreal things in my essays. For instance, my teachers were not perfect but I had to describe them as angels. How could I write well when the lies always stopped my ideas? In my opinion, this was the worst teaching way because the teachers were killing students' self-expression and teaching their students how to tell lies. Fortunately, I was not good at writing, but I have never failed the exams because I always beat my brains out to finish my essays.

2.8. Write about your idol

Korean Kpop music is more and more interesting and known by many people around the world. Me too, I am especially impressed and become a fan of BLACKPINK – one of the most popular girl groups in Kpop at the moment.

I got to know BLACKPINK through a classmate who showed me their performance on stage. I was especially impressed with the 4 girls who performed hard with their strong voices and full of personality.

BLACKPINK’s products are all in the top hit songs in the Kpop music market in general and in Asia in particular. They always keep up with trends and lead the music market with catchy tunes, beautiful dance moves and perfect public appearances.

“Lovesick Girl” is Blackpink’s newest music product to date. Because of the good voice, the MV is heavily invested with the great appearance of 4 girls, they have affirmed their position and position in the fans’ hearts for Kpop entertainment.

2.9. Write about your plan for future

Everybody has a plan for future. Though future is uncertain and many times unpredictable, I believe that to some extent our future depends on our actions on past and present. In the future, I want to run a mega shopping mall business where my involvement would not be mandatory to run the daily business and I would enjoy my time by visiting different places of the world.

After I finished my graduation, I started working for a small company. Now I am working for a large multinational company I have planned to work till I become 36 and then I will take early retirement. The money I will inherit and the amount I am currently saving per month should allow me to start a business. I have planned to start a big shopping mall. I will have my close relatives as the employees and authorities of the business and initially I will work in this shopping mall for 2-3 years to make it run smoothly. When the business would go on with its own path, I will enjoy my vacation and would visit different renowned and beautiful cities of the world. I will visit Asia, Europe, Russia and many more places.

Hopefully, I will enjoy the retirement and the trips. Though I am not sure about the future but I have already planned for it. Because I believe proper planning and initiation is the half of the total task and fulfilling dream. I have already taken some steps towards achieving my future plan.

2.10. Write about your best friend

My best friend in high school is Lan. Lan sits next to me in class, eats with me at break time, and hangs out with me after school. She has beautiful and long hair; my mother always says that I need to pay more attention to my hair so it can be pretty as hers. I am good at English while Lan is excellent in Math, therefore we can help each other every time one of us has trouble in understanding those subjects. Besides our study, Lan is always by my side whenever I feel upset. I tell her everything, and only she can know my true feelings. We have been best friends since our young age, and I will keep this friendship forever.

2.11. Describe your house

Many people dream to have a modern house located in the city, however, I love my house in my peaceful hometown. My house has only 2 floors and is not spacious, but the space is enough for a family to live cosily. My father painted the house blue, which is my favourite colour, and the ceiling is beautifully decorated with star and moon ornaments. My mother loves natural lights rather than artificial lights so each room has its own large windows. There is a balcony in my bedroom, where I can enjoy the breathtaking view of the sea every morning. We have a large garden where we plant flowers, which I can’t have if we live in the city. Because I have a job in the city, I only visit my house twice a month. The time I live in my house with my parents is always the best part in my life.

2.12. Write about your family

There are four people in my family: my parents, my younger sister and I. My father is a 45-year-old engineer. He spends most of his time in the building sites. That’s why he has a tanned skin. As soon as he comes home, he turns on the television to watch the news, relaxes for a while and then he takes a shower. In case my mother doesn’t cook for the dinner yet, my father is very happy to join hand and help her. Talk about my mother, she is a 40-year-old primary school teacher. In every morning, she is the one who wakes up earliest to prepare the breakfast, clothes and necessary things for my father, me and my sister. After we leave home to work or study, my mother will have a quick breakfast and drive to the primary school. After school, she runs fast to the market, buys some fresh food and backs to home to cook lunch. My father doesn’t come home in the noon so only three of us eat and talk to each other during lunch. However, the lunch is still prepared very scrupulous. In general, my mother is a gentle caring woman and sometimes she is very strict. I have a younger sister who will be 8 years old in the next October. My sister is pretty, docile and hard study. On every weekend, I take her to the park to have fun and we will buy some tasty ice creams. We quite close and sometimes she makes me very angry because of her negligent habit. The last person in my family is me. I am studying in the second year of Business Administration major at Hong Bang University. My schedule is changed frequently and I am also trying to get a scholarship to study abroad in Canada next year so I don’t spend much time to my family. But any time when I am free I try to help my mother in household chores and take care of my sister. In my family, each person has a different responsibility but we always stand together to enjoy happiness moments, overcome the difficult time and solve the problems. I understand that there is nothing that is more important than my family. I love my parents and my lovely sister so much.

2.13. Write about your pet

I like most of animals as long as they are not harmful or dangerous, but my favorite oneis dog. Dogs are well known for their intelligence and loyalty; and in my opinion, theirlooks are also very cute. There are many different breeds in the world, and most countrieshave at least one featuring dog breed of their own. Nowadays, most breeds of dog are notthe same as they were from hundred years ago, but they have been artificially selected forparticular appearances and behaviors by people for specific purposes. Because of thisselective breeding, dogs have developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and they showmore connection with people than any other land mammal. Some of the most popularbreeds are Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, Alaska, Bulldog, Doberman, GermanShepherd, and it can be said that each breed has their own significant function in human’slife. Dogs have been the best companions for human at a very early age, their roles inhunting, herding, pulling loads and protection truly helped human in a lot of aspects.More recently, they have developed more practical roles in assisting police and military,companionship, and helping handicapped ones, and most people accept that dogs appearin their lives more than they had ever thought. My family has a little dog, and he has allof the best qualities of a good one. He is actually my best friend since I am the one whospends most time playing with him. I love him very much, but I have to accept a fact thathis life span is much shorter than human. A well – treated dog can live up to 12 or 15 years, and each year in dog’s life span is equal with 5 years in human’s one. Since dogsare the most popular animal to show such love and loyalty to human, its shortage in lifespan is truly a sad thing for all the dog lovers. Although I do not have much time with mybeloved dogs, I always love them as my best companions in life

2.14. Write about your favorite season

There are four seasons in one year, every season leaves me a special impression. However, autumn is perhaps the one that I like best. It usually lasts from July to September of the year. The weather is quite cool and pleasant. The sky is blue and pretty high while the sun is warm. Cool winds bring the scent of new paddy fields or guava flavor in the garden. On the two sides of the road, the colorful chrysanthemum show off its beauty in the sunshine. All the children are eagerly waiting for the school day, our parents take us to stores to buy books and other personal items preparing for new school year. Everyone is all looking forward to seeing their friends after three months of summer vacation. Especially, in the middle of Autumn, we also break the moon cake very happily. How wonderful is it! I hope autumn will come soon.

My favorite music is pop. Actually, I like all kinds of music. But the most favorite part is pop. That is because most people listen to music. Pop music is the most common music around us. It has a good point, we can listen to it easily, and we find it simple. Those reasons make me interested, so I like pop music. My favorite pop musician is Justin Bieber. He is one of the most famous soloist single. His songs are dance music but I like his voice and dance. I support the idea that a singer's voice is an important point in pop music. When I choose a song, I focus on the singer's voice style. also in my iPOD I have lots of songs; nearly all lists are pop music, but most of them are Korean pop music.

The book that I love most is “Hachiko - the waiting dog”. The book tells the story of the famous dog named Hachiko and friendship with his owner – professor Eisaburo. Hachiko lives with the professor’s family in Tokyo. Everyday, in the morning, Hachiko followed professor Eisaburo to the gas station when he commuted to work. And every afternoon, at 5 pm, no matter how sunny or rainy it was, the dog came to the gas station to wait for the professor comming back home. The way from home to the station and from the station to home was Hachiko’s the happiest time. Professor Eisaburo always confessed with Hachiko, talked and played with him. They had been together for a long time before a tragedy came up. As every day, Hachiko was waited for the professor coming back. But the professor had passed away because of a stroke when he was presenting on the stage. Not being discouraged, Hachiko still waited for the professor the following days regardless of any kind of weather. Once the professor’s wife sent him to the countryside far away from Tokyo, but Hachiko tried to escape and backed in the station to continue waiting until he died. This was a touching story and made me cry many times. I kept the book carefully and read again when I meet difficulties on school. The book helps me release stress and depression. Thanks to the book, I can learn a precious lesson.

There is a famous animated film that I think everyone of us has seen at least once, and it is Tom and Jerry. Almost everyone is aware of the story between the miserable Tom and the mischievous mouse Jerry, and it also was part of my childhood memories. The film is about a life under the same roof between two enemies Tom and Jerry, and of course cat and mouse are always hard to get along with. Tom's owner is very afraid mouse, so she always asks Tom to catch the little mouse living in a cave that he digs on the wall. Tom is a quite lazy cat, and he often has to chase Tom so that he is not scolded by his owner or in exchange for a good meal. Sometimes, Jerry also makes mischievous jokes to tease Tom such as pull out his hair or steal his milk. Another character in the movie is the dog Spike, and he does not seem to like Tom at all. In the chasing scenes of the two main characters, they sometimes run to the garden - Spike's residence - and disturb his sleep. Most of the time, Tom would be the one who suffers Spike's anger while Jerry is having a big laugh. The plot is simple but the film Tom and Jerry always attracts a lot of audiences of all ages thanks to the lovely characters and funny circumstances. Although many years have gone by, the television channels have often displayed this film, and this is the indispensable spiritual food children.
