Television and Kids

Television is very popular and even has some benefits for kids. It helps very young children learn the letters of the alphabet, and helps other kids learn about science, cultures, and world events.

However, researchers show that too much TV is bad for children. For one thing, there is a link between watching more than four hours of TV a day and being overweight. For another thing, many TV shows are violent and upsetting. Watching these shows may cause kids to be more fearful. And of course, more time in front of the TV means less time to study. Too much TV may also be the cause of lower grades.

Experts do not agree on the solution to these problems. Some say that kids should watch only educational programs; others say kids should watch no TV at all. And others suggest teaching them to watch TV as occasional entertainment, not as an everyday hobby.

The Beatles

In the 1960s, the Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in the whole world. Since then, there have been a great many groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is difficult now to imagine how sensational the Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the north of England and none of them had any training in music. They started by performing and recording songs by black Americans and they had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own songs and that was when they became really popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became common for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit record was in 1963 and they split up in 1970.They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as souvenirs! However, today some of their songs remain as famous as they were when they first came out. Throughout the world, many people can sing part of a Beatles song if you ask them.

39. The passage is mainly about _______

A. how the Beatles became more successful than other groups.

B. why the Beatles split up after 7 years.

C. The Beatles’ fame and success.

D. many people’s ability to sing a Beatles song.

D. received good training in music.

41. What is not true about the Beatles?

A. The members had no training in music.

B. They had long stable career.

C. They became famous when they wrote their own songs.

D. They changed pop music.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high- quality protein, eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more than two- thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent years, which in turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These eggs substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the advantage of having low cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in banking. One disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs is a new type of egg, sometimes called "designer" eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low- flat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans.

Eggs producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed results. It may be that is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certainly dietary fats stimulate the body's production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one's intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level.

38. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce the idea that dietary fat increases the blood cholesterol level.

B. To make people how about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol.

C. To persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten.

D. To convince people to eat "designer" eggs and egg substitutes.

39. What has been the cause for changes in the sale of eggs?

A. Increasing price

B. Decreased production

C. Dietary changes in hens

D. Concerns about cholesterol

40. What is meant by the phrase "mixed results"?

A. The results are blended

B. The results are a composite of things.

C. The results are inconclusive.

D. The results are mingled together.

41. Which of the following could best replace the word "somewhat"?

A. in fact         B. a little             C. indefinitely              D. a lot

42. According to the passage, one yolk contains approximately what fraction of the suggested daily limit for human consumption of cholesterol?

A. 3/4              B. 2/3            C. 1/2                D. 1/3

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

In the earliest times children got their education directly from parents and other adults. They learned mainly skills for survival. Adults passed down this knowledge through spoken language. Eventually cultures around the world began inventing writing. As societies developed they set up schools to teach reading, writing, maths and other subjects.

The first schools were usually just for boys. Most of the students came from rich and powerful families. Often the purpose of their education was religious training. In many cultures the religious leaders formed the highest level of society. Some schools had other purposes as well. Many schools focused on military training. Sometimes youths attended special schools to learn the art of public speaking. These skills were meant to help them become future leaders.

Most girls received their education at home. They learned cooking, sewing and other useful skills. Over time education became available to more people, not just the rich and powerful. The governments of some countries set up public systems of education in the 1800s. More schools opened to girls.

During the 1900s marks, or grades, became a new measure of learning. Testing became a regular part of formal education. As education became more important to people, teachers' colleges opened. The requirements for becoming a teacher became stricter. Teaching became a highly respected profession.
