Safety on Foot
We've all heard it a thousand times: "Look both ways before you cross the street!" But how many people really obey this simple rule? According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 100,000 pedestrians (people traveling on foot) are hit by cars each year. It is one of the leading causes of accidental death for children. So, how can you be safe when you are walking? Follow these simple rules offered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
- Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk in the street, always walk on the side that allows you to face oncoming traffic.
- Wear bright colors. You want drivers to be able to see you. If you must walk at night, be sure to wear reflective clothing or tape so that drivers can see you.
- Cross the street only at marked crosswalks or corners, and always stop at the curb before crossing. Look both ways (left, then right, then left again). If you see a car coming, wait for it to pass. Keep looking for cars as you cross.
- Walk at a good pace. Never run.

Vietnam is a densely-populated, developing country that in the last 30 years has had to recover from the ravages of war. Substantial progress was achieved from 1986 to 1997 in moving forward from an extremely low level of development and significantly reducing poverty. Since 2001, Vietnamese authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to economic liberalization and international integration. They have moved to implement the structural reforms needed to modernize the economy and to produce more competitive, export-driven industries.

Vietnam joined the WTO (World Trade Organization) in January 2007, following over a decade long negotiation process. This should provide an important boost to the economy and should help to ensure the continuation of liberalizing reforms.

Coming from a (6)________ country, I got quite a shock, as conditions were much harder than I had expected. But after a few days I got used to (7)________ there. One of my jobs was to supply the village (8)________ water. The well was a long walk away, and the women used to spend a long time every day carrying heavy pots backwards and forwards. So I contacted the organisation and arranged to have some pipes delivered. (9)________ these pipes were not really perfect, they still made a great difference to the villagers.
All in all, I think my time with OV was a good experience. Although it was not paid, it was well worth doing and I would recommend it to anyone (10)________ was considering working for a charity.

Have you ever had a dream about traveling to another planet in our solar system? I If you have, there is an actual programme that is happening right now, and it hopes to send people to Mars in 2023. Known as the Mars One Mission, it will send a crew of four people on a one-way mission to colonize Mars. Those chosen people will have to be ready to say good-bye to the earth forever, as there will not be a return trip.
For the people chosen, they will have to learn to do many different things. First of all, they will be living the rest of their lives with just a handful of other people, so they all must have personalities that allow them to get along. Second, the living quarters that they will have won’t be very spacious, so they will have to deal with that condition as well. If they feel homesick, they will only be able to communicate with people back on the earth via e-mail and videos and audio sent back and forth. However, there won’t be any real-time communication. Even at the speed of light, communication between the earth and Mars takes about 20 minutes.
Whether the Mars One Mission will actually happen is the big question that a lot of people are asking. There is an enormous skepticism in the science community, and Wired magazine gave the mission a miserable score of two out of ten on its probability scale. Women in Britain are better off today than they used to be. At the beginning of the 19th century, women seem to have almost no rights at all. They could not vote, or even sign a contract. Their marriages were arranged by their parents. They were once kept at home and if they were allowed to work, they were never given responsible jobs. It is strange to think that, as far as we know, most women were happy with that situation.
Today the position is quite different. Women now can vote and choose their own husbands. In 1970, a law was passed to give them an equal share of property in the case of divorce, and in the same year the Equal Pay Act gave them the right to get equal payment with men for work of equal value.
Despite these changes, there is no doubt that there are still great differences in status between men and women. Many employers seem to ignore the Equal Pay Act. It is also more difficult for a woman to get promotion than a man does.
There is sex distinction in England although it has not been so serious as it was. More and more women go out to work, earn more money, get high positions in the society, and live independently. However, there are two great problems to solve. The first problem is men’s attitude. They always think that women are lower in rank and are the weaker sex. We do not know exactly how long it will take them to change their mind. And the other problem which is much more difficult is women’s attitude. They should be ready to struggle to change their fate.

A. They consider women to be equal to them.
B. They always look up women.
C. They consider women the stronger sex.
