Throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, citizens of the United States maintained a bias against big cities. Most lived on farms and in small towns and believed cities to be centers of corruption, crime, poverty, and moral degradation. Their distrust was caused, in part, by a national ideology that proclaimed farming the greatest occupation and rural living superior to urban living. This attitude prevailed even as the number of urban dwellers increased and cities became an essential feature of the national landscape. Gradually, economic reality overcame ideology. Thousands abandoned the precarious life on the farm for more secure and better paying jobs in the city. But when these people migrated from the countryside, they carried their fears and suspicion with them. These new urbanities, already convinced that cities were overwhelmed with great problems, eagerly embraced the progressive reforms that promised to bring order out of the chaos of the city.
One of many reforms came in the area of public utilities. Water and sewerage were usually operated by municipal governments, but the gas and electric networks were privately owned. Reformers feared that the privately owned utility companies would charge exorbitant rates for these essential services and deliver them only to people who could afford them. Some city and state governments responded by regulating the utility companies, but a number of cities began to supply these services themselves. Proponents of these reforms argued that public ownership and regulation would insure widespread access to these utilities and guarantee a fair price.
While some reforms focused on government and public behavior, others looked at the cities as a whole Civic leaders, convinced that physical environment influenced human behavior, argued that cities should develop master plans to guide their future growth and development. City planning was nothing new, but the rapid industrialization and urban growth of the late nineteenth century took place without any consideration for order. Urban renewal in the twentieth century followed several courses. Some cities introduced plans to completely rebuild the city core. Most other cities contented themselves with zoning plans for regulating future growth. Certain parts of town were restricted to residential use, while others were set aside for industrial or commercial development.

Bitcoins are a form of virtual currency. In other words, they are a type of money that does not exist in the actual world. However, they can be used to purchase actual products and services from real companies.
The bitcoin system was created in 2009 by an enigmatic person named Satoshi Nakamoto. In fact, no one is sure if Satoshi Nakamoto is an actual person or a group of people. Bitcoins are designed to serve as an alternative to national currencies, such as dollars and euros. They can be used to pay for things online instead of cash or credit cards. When bitcoins are transferred from a buyer to a seller, the transaction is recorded in a public database.
Governments are concerned that bitcoins can easily be stolen by hackers. It has dawned on them that they might be used for illegal purposes. For example, stolen goods could be purchased without the government’s knowledge. Although more and more companies are beginning to accept bitcoins, the percentage of purchases made using bitcoins is minuscule compared to other online payment methods, such as credit cards. Instead, many bitcoin owners simply keep them as an investment since they believe their bitcoins will be more valuable in the future.
This may or may not be a wise approach. Currently, the value of bitcoins is fluctuating wildly, especially when compared to highly stable national currencies. Bitcoin investors are gambling on the hope that as this high-tech money becomes more widely accepted, its value will soar.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 7.
The Effects of Desert Weather
A desert is a type of landscape that receives little precipitation. Deserts are normally defined as areas that receive annual precipitation of less than 250mm. But some places such as Tucson, Arizona receive more but are still called deserts. That is because they have a much higher rate of evaporation.
Many environmentalists argue that desert regions are increasing. This process is called desertification. It happens when useful soil is blown away by wind. Then the temperature rises, and an area that was once fertile becomes desert. They say that this is due to global warming. It is also due to overdevelopment. Both of these problems are major threats to humanity.
True deserts have very spare vegetation. These deserts exist in the most arid regions of Earth. In these places, rainfall is rare and infrequent. Deserts have a reputation for supporting little life. But this is not true. Deserts have many animals that hide during daylight. About one fifth of the Earth is covered in desert.
Desert landscapes are often composed of sand and rocky surfaces. Sand dunes and stony surfaces called regs are often found in deserts. Cold deserts have similar features but receive snow instead of rain. Antarctica is the largest cold desert. The largest hot desert is the Sahara.
Most deserts have an extreme temperature range. The temperature is very low at night. This is because the air is so dry that it holds little heat. The desert cools as soon as the sun sets. Cloudless skies also increase the release of heat at night.
Sand covers only about 20% of Earth's deserts. There are six forms of deserts. One of the forms is a mountain or a basin desert. Hamada deserts are comprised of plateau landforms. Regs consist of rock pavements. Ergs are formed by sand seas. Intermontane basins occur at high elevations. Finally, badlands are arid regions comprised of clay-rich soil.

The interrelationship of science, technology, and industry is taken for granted today - summed up, not altogether accurately, as "research and development." Yet historically this widespread faith in the economic virtues of science is a relatively recent phenomenon, dating back in the United States about 150 years, and in the Western world as a whole not over 300 years at most. Even in this current era of large scale, intensive research and development, the interrelationships involved in this process are frequently misunderstood. Until the coming of the Industrial Revolution, science and technology evolved for the most part independently of each other. Then as industrialization became increasingly complicated, the craft techniques of preindustrial society gradually gave way to a technology based on the systematic application of scientific knowledge and scientific methods. This changeover started slowly and progressed unevenly. Until late in the nineteenth century, only a few industries could use scientific techniques or cared about using them. The list expanded noticeably after 1870, but even then much of what passed for the application of science was "engineering science" rather than basic science.
Nevertheless, by the middle of the nineteenth century, the rapid expansion of scientific knowledge and of public awareness - if not understanding - of it had created a belief that the advance of science would in some unspecified manner automatically generate economic benefits. The widespread and usually uncritical acceptance of this thesis led in turn to the assumption that the application of science to industrial purposes was a linear process, starting with fundamental science, then proceeding to applied science or technology, and through them to industrial use. This is probably the most common pattern, but it is not invariable. New areas of science have been opened up and fundamental discoveries made as a result of attempts to solve a specific technical or economic problem. Conversely, scientists who mainly do basic also serve as consultants on projects that apply research in practical ways.
In sum, the science-technology-industry relationship may flow in several different ways, and the particular channel it will follow depends on the individual situation. It may at times even be multidirectional.
Câu 8 (TH): What is the author's main purpose in the passage?
A. To show how technology influenced basic science.
B. To describe the scientific base of nineteenth-century American industries.

C. The relationship between research and development should be criticized.
D. Industrial needs should determine what areas fundamental science focuses on.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
In the past, technology and progress were very slow. People “invented” farming 12,000 years ago but it took 8,000 years for the idea to go around the world. Then, about 3,500 years ago, people called “potters” used round wheels to turn and make plates. But it took hundreds of years before some clever person thought, if we join two wheels together and make them bigger, we can use them to move things In the last few centuries, things have begun to move faster. Take a 20th-century invention like the aeroplane, for example. The first aeroplane flight on 17 December 1903 only lasted 12 seconds, and the plane only went 37 metres. It can't have been very exciting to watch, but that flight changed the world. Sixteen years later, the first plane flew across the Atlantic, and only fifty years after that, men walked on the moon. Technology is now changing our world faster and faster. So what will the future bring?
One of the first changes will be the materials we use. Scientists have just invented an amazing new material called graphene, and soon we will use it to do lots of things. With graphene batteries in your mobile, it will take a few seconds to charge your phone or download a thousand gigabytes of information! Today, we make most products in factories, but in the future, scientists will invent living materials. Then we won't make things like cars and furniture in factories - we will grow them!
Thirty years ago, people couldn't have imagined social media like Twitter and Facebook. Now we can't live without them. But this is only the start. Right now, scientists are putting microchips in some disabled people's brains, to help them see, hear and communicate better. In the future, we may all use these technologies. We won't need smartphones to use social media or search the internet because the internet will be in our heads!
More people will go into space in the future, too. Space tourism has already begun, and a hundred years from now, there may be many hotels in space. One day, we may get most of our energy from space too. In 1941, the writer Isaac Asimov wrote about a solar power station in space. People laughed at his idea then, but we should have listened to him. Today, many people are trying to develop a space solar power station. After all, the sun always shines above the clouds!

A. people didn't invent many things

A. To explain how space travel started.
B. To explain why transport changed in the 20th century.
C. Because he thinks It's the most important invention in history.
D. To show how an invention developed quickly.
Câu 24 (TH): What does the writer say about the future of communication?
A. We can't know what the most popular social media will be.
B. Microchips will become faster.
C. We won't need devices like smartphones.
D. We won't use the internet as much.
Câu 25 (TH): What does the writer say about space solar power?
A. It's an old idea, but people are only starting to develop it now.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Naming customs are different around the world. In most cultures, however, people have at least two names: a family name and a given name. Your given name is the name you receive when you are born. Your family name is the name you share with other people in your family. In the United States, the family name is often called the last name, and the given name is often called the first name. However, the order of the two names is not the same everywhere. For example, in many Asian countries, the family name is first and the given name is second. When two people from different cultures meet, sometimes they use the incorrect name. This can cause embarrassment.
Family names can show something about a family's early history. The origin of many English family names is a place, like London, or a job, such as Farmer or Shoemaker. A long time ago, these families probably worked as farmers or shoemakers. Swedish and Danish family names often mean son of. For example, Johansson means son of Johan. In South Korea, there are only about 250 family names. These names go back hundreds of years to very old clans. About half of all Koreans have one of the three most common family names - Kim, Park, or Lee.
There is generally no choice about a family name, but there is much more choice about given names. Parents choose their child's name for many different reasons. They may select a name that sounds beautiful or means something special. These names may have meanings like peace or happiness. In some cultures, there may be a connection between children's names and when or how they were born. For example, a Yoruba child in Nigeria might have a name like Sunday or Born on a Sunny Day. In some countries, parents may pay money to a professional baby namer to help them find a good name. They want to find a name that will be lucky for their child.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
In 16th-century France, the start of the new year was observed on April 1st. It was celebrated much the same way it is today- with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar to the Christian world, and the new year fell on January 18. Some people either didn't hear about the new calendar system or didn't believe the change had really been made. These people continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st. They became the target of jokes. People played tricks on them and called them “April's fools." They sent them on a “fool's errand" or tried to make them believe that something false was true.
Today, some Americans continued the tradition by playing tricks on their friends on the first of April. One well-known trick or practical joke is to put salt in the sugar bowl. Something that college students do is to print false headlines in their college newspaper - such as "FREE BEER IN THE LIBRARY". Most April Fool's jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone.
