I. LÝ THUYẾT
1. Cấu trúc
1.1) Dạng quá khứ đơn của động từ “to be”
* Khẳng định:
I/He/She/It/ danh từ số ít + was
Ex: I was at school last week. (Tuần trước tôi ở trường)
You/We/They/ danh từ số nhiều + were
Ex: They were at school last week. (Tuần trước họ ở trường)
* Phủ định
I/He/She/It/ danh từ số ít + was not (wasn’t)
Ex: I wasn’t at school last week. (Tuần trước tôi không ở trường)
You/We/They/ danh từ số nhiều + were not (weren’t)
Ex: We weren’t at school last week. (Tuần trước chúng tôi ở trường)
* Nghi vấn
Was + I/he/she/it/danh từ số ít...?
Ex: Was he at school last week? (Tuần trước anh ấy có ở trường không?)
Were + you/we/they/danh từ số nhiều...?
Ex: Were we at school last week? (Tuần trước chúng ta có ở trường không?)
1.2) Dạng quá khứ đơn của động từ thường
* Khẳng định:
S (chủ ngữ ) + Ved/ P2
Ex: We studied English last night. (Tối qua chúng tôi đã học tiếng Anh.)
He met his old friend near his house yesterday. (Anh ấy đã gặp người bạn cũ của mình ngay gần nhà ngày hôm qua.)
* Phủ định:
S + didn't/ did not + V
Ex: He didn’t come to school last week. (Tuần trước cậu ta không đến trường.)
We didn’t see him at the cinema last night. (Chúng tôi không trông thấy anh ta tại rạp chiếu phim tối hôm qua.)
* Nghi vấn:
Did + S + V(nguyên thể)...?
Ex: Did you visit Ho Chi Minh Museum with your class last weekend? (Bạn có đi thăm bảo tàng Hồ Chí Minh với lớp của bạn cuối tuần trước hay không?)
Yes, I did./ No, I didn’t.
Did he miss the train yesterday? (Cậu ta có lỡ chuyến tàu ngày hôm qua hay không?)
2. Cách sử dụng của thì quá khứ đơn
Dùng để diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và kết thúc trong quá khứ.
Ex:
- They went to the concert last night. (Họ đã tới rạp hát tối hôm qua.)
- The plane took off two hours ago. (Máy bay đã cất cánh cách đây 2 giờ.)
3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn.
Trong câu có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ:
- yesterday (hôm qua)
- last night/ last week/ last month/ last year: tối qua/ tuần trước/ tháng trước/ năm ngoái
- ago: Cách đây. (two hours ago: cách đây 2 giờ/ two weeks ago: cách đây 2 ngày …)
- when: khi (trong câu kể)
4. Cách chia động từ ở quá khứ
a. Ta thêm “-ed” vào sau động từ:
- Thông thường ta thêm “ed” vào sau động từ.
- Ví dụ: watch – watched
turn – turned
want – wanted
* Chú ý khi thêm đuôi “-ed” vào sau động từ.
+ Động từ tận cùng là “e” -> ta chỉ cần cộng thêm “d”.
Ví dụ: type – typed smile – smiled agree – agreed
+ Động từ có MỘT âm tiết, tận cùng là MỘT phụ âm, trước phụ âm là MỘT nguyên âm -> ta nhân đôi phụ âm cuối rồi thêm “-ed”.
Ví dụ: stop – stopped shop – shopped tap – tapped
+ Động từ tận cùng là “y”:
- Nếu trước “y” là MỘT nguyên âm (a,e,i,o,u) ta cộng thêm “ed”.
Ví dụ: play – played stay - stayed
- Nếu trước “y” là phụ âm (còn lại ) ta đổi “y” thành “i + ed”.
Ví dụ: study – studied cry - cried
b. Một số động từ bất quy tắc không thêm “ed”.
Có một số động từ khi sử dụng ở thì quá khứ không theo qui tắc thêm “ed”. Những động từ này ta cần học thuộc.
Một số ví dụ: do-did, go-went, …

Bài 1: Chia động từ ở thì quá khứ đơn
1. Yesterday, I (go)______ to the restaurant with a client.
2. We (drive) ______ around the parking lot for 20 mins to find a parking space.
3. When we (arrive) ______ at the restaurant, the place (be) ______ full.
4. The waitress (ask) ______ us if we (have) reservations.
5. I (say), "No, my secretary forgets to make them."
6. The waitress (tell)______ us to come back in two hours.
7. My client and I slowly (walk) ______ back to the car.
8. Then we (see) ______ a small grocery store.
9. We (stop) in the grocery store and (buy) ______ some sandwiches.
10. That (be) ______ better than waiting for two hours.
Đáp án:
1. Yesterday, I went to the restaurant with a client.
2. We drove around the parking lot for 20 mins to find a parking space.
3. When we arrived at the restaurant, the place was full.
4. The waitress asked us if we had reservations.
5. I said, "No, my secretary forgets to make them."
6. The waitress told us to come back in two hours.
7. My client and I slowly walked back to the car.
8. Then we saw a small grocery store.
9. We stopped in the grocery store and bought some sandwiches.
10. That was better than waiting for two hours.
