The idea for the Internet began in the early 1960s in the United States. The Department of Defense wanted to connect then computers together in order to share private information. In 1969, the ARPAnet (an early form of the Internet) first connected computers at four American universities. One computer successfully sent information to another. In 1972, scientists shared the ARPAnet with the world. They created a way to send person-to-person messages using the ARPAnet. This was the beginning of e-mail.

Over the next few years, there was a lot of progress made in the world of computing, but most people were not using the Internet. Then, in the 1980s, personal computers became more common. In the early 1990s, two important things happened] the birth of the World Wide Web in 1991, and the creation of the first Web browser in 1993. SECTION B: READING (8 POINTS)

Read the passage and choose the best answer:

FOOD AROUND THE WORLD

It isn't amazing how much time we spend talking about food? "Have you ever eaten ...?", "What do you have for lunch?" and so on. And yet, when you travel from one county to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and what other people eat is strange and silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times a day. Australians drink large amounts of beer and the French drink wine every day.

The sorts of meat people like to eat also differ from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish. So it seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is a little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habit.

1. What is the main idea of the text?

A. People have the same feelings about food.

B. People think about food differently.

3. Which of these people drink wine every day?

4. Why are the Japanese not interested in sheep meat?

A. They don't like its smell.

B. It tastes bad.

C. Horse meat and goat meat are popular.

5. In which country do people often drink beer?

A. France B. Australia C. England

6. Which is popular food in Japan?

A. Fish B. Horse meat C. Goat meat

7. How does the writer conclude about our eating habit?

A. Our eating habit is difficult to change.

B. People everywhere enjoy eating new food.

C. We can change our eating habit easily.

D. Match the countries and their popular foods or drinks:

ENGLAND, FRANCE, AMERICA, THE MIDDLE EAST, ASIA, ENGLAND.

III. Read the passage and choose the best answer. (1.25pts)

Most people think that the older you get, the harder it is to learn a new language. That is, they believe that children learn more easily and efficiently than adults. Thus, at some point in our lives, maybe around age 12 or 13, we lose the ability to learn languages well. Is this idea a fact or myth?

Is it true that children learn a foreign language more efficiently than adults? On the contrary, research studies suggest that the opposite may be true. One report, on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish, concluded that the teenagers learned more, in less time, than the younger children. Another report, on Americans learning Russian, showed a direct improvement of ability over the age range tested; that is, the ability to learn increased as the age increased, from childhood to adulthood.

There are several possible explanations for these findings. For one thing, adults know more about the world and therefore are able to understand meanings more easily than children. Moreover, adults can use logical thinking to help themselves see patterns in the language. Finally, adults have more self-discipline (self-control) than children.

All in all, it seems that the common idea that children are better language learners than adults may not be a fact, but a myth.

A. teenagers are more difficult to teach

B. Danish teenagers can learn Swedish faster than younger children
