For many young people in Britain, sport is a popular part of school life, and being in one of the school teams and playing in matches is very important. If someone is in a team, it means a lot of extra practice and often spending a Saturday or Sunday away from home, as many matches are played then.

It can also involve travelling to other towns to play against other school teams and then staying on after the match for a meal or a drink. Sometimes parents, friends and other students will travel with the team to support their own side.

When a school team wins a match, it is the whole school that feels proud, not only the players. It can also mean that the school  becomes well-known for being good at certain sports, and students from that school may end up playing for national and international teams so that the school has some really famous names associated with it!

Read the passage below carefully and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D).

The earliest turtles were known from around 200 million years ago, which makes turtles one of the oldest reptile groups, and a much more ancient group than the lizards and snakes. About 300 species are alive today. Some are highly endangered. Turtles vary widely in size, although, marine turtles tend to be relatively bigger animals than their land and freshwater relatives. The largest is a marine turtle, which reaches a shell length of 200 cm and can reach a weight of over 900 kg. Freshwater turtles are generally smaller. They became extinct at the same time as the appearance of Man, and it is assumed that humans hunted them for food. Most turtles and tortoises have eyes placed on the upper sides of their heads. Species of turtles that spend most of their life on land have their eyes looking down at objects in front of them. The color of a turtle’s shell may vary. Shells are commonly colored brown, black, or olive green.

In some species, shells may have red, orange, yellow, or grey markings and these markings are often spots, lines. Even though many spend large amounts of their lives underwater, all turtles and tortoises are air-breathing reptiles, and must surface at regular intervals to refill their lungs with fresh air. They can also spend a lot of their lives on dry land. Sea turtles lay their eggs on dry sandy beaches, and are highly endangered largely as a result of beach development and over hunting. Immature sea turtles are not raised by their parents.

Telling the Whole Food Truth As a teacher of whole-food vegetarian cookery, I do feel a certain sympathy with the ‘Men for Meat’ group. There is both confusion and just plain, unappetizing cooking in this area, when a whole-food/ vegetable diet should and can be highly nutritious and utterly delicious.

The words ‘whole-food’ and ‘vegetarian’ are not synonymous: vegetarians do not eat any ‘fish, flesh or fowl’. Most eat dairy products. Those who don’t are called vegans. I tell students not to turn vegetarian until they have become knowledgeable about nutrition, and especially about protein. It’s very easy to become a sick vegetarian.

And a whole-food diet just consists of eating the whole of food, with nothing added, and nothing taken away. For example, you eat whole-wheat flour, not white flour, which has had bleach added. In all, no refined carbohydrates are eaten and very fatty and additive-laden foods are avoided and the stress is on fresh products of the best quality. And that’s all - except you must then find recipes which are both healthy and delicious because you’ll have to cook it all yourself. Very few ready-bought meals fulfill both requirements.

6. A whole food diet _____.

A. has a lot of nutrition

B. is easy to eat

C. is added with flour.

D. is often fresh

7. According to the writer, what is wrong with ready bought meals for vegetarians?

A. They can be cooked easily.

B. They can’t be both healthy and delicious.

C. They contain some additives.

D. They have best quality.

8. What is NOT true about the writer?

A. She supports the whole food.

B. She is a teacher.

C. She dislikes ready bought meal

D. She is a vegetarian.

9. The writer of this article feels a ‘certain sympathy’ for this group because _____.

A. She is a vegetarian.

B. They don’t know much about vegetarian cooking

C. her students do not eat meat.

D. “whole food” and “vegetarian” are not the same.

10. ‘Men for Meat’ is a _____.

A. group of vegetarians

B. cookery group

C. group that eat all kinds of food

D. group of men

Once there were lots of pandas in the mountains of Western China. Today they are becoming extinct. The reason is they cannot find enough food. Pandas eat bamboo leaves. They do not like another food. The bamboo grows very slowly. It can take ten years for a bamboo to grow from a seed to a big plant. Some types of bamboo have seeds only once every 60 years. Pandas must wait many years for their food to grow. While the bamboo is growing, pandas do not have enough leaves to eat. Farmers are using more and more of the land on the mountain side to grow food for man. The farmers cut down the bamboo. Bamboo leaves become less plentiful. Pandas cannot find enough food to eat. They starve and die. China and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are trying to save the pandas. In 1979 they began to set up special parks where pandas can live.
