Choose the correct option among A, B, C or D that best fits the blank space.

Jazz, (1) _______ or classical are terms frequently used to distinguish between different "genres" of music, but they could also be described as (2) _______ "styles". In that sense, "style" would denote the more general and "genre" the more specific characteristics of the music concerned. Be that as it may, it is helpful to regard "genre" as a description of the social function of music.

It is also important to understand that when one likes a piece of music, when it becomes meaningful to a particular person, some of the meaning of that song will inhere in the style or genre in (3)_______ it is composed or performed. If I am (4) _______ jazz and loathe heavy metal then that preference will make me (5) _______ a particular song in the genre of heavy metal regardless of whether it is a good song or not.

In order to help solve the problem of pollution, people have to be aware of its causes, some of which are quite obvious in everyday life. In many cities, people are forced to breathe in polluted air, commonly known as smog, which is a mixture of gases sent out by car exhausts and factory chimneys. What can be done to reduce air pollution is to remove factories from cities and use lead-free petrol in cars.

The pollution of rivers, lakes and seas leads to the death of the creatures that live in them. Factories are largely responsible for the present situation, which is expected to worsen if governments do not make them obey the law against pollution and punish industries which pollute water.

Finally, all over the world, especially in cities, we see huge amounts of rubbish in the streets, which we are responsible for. The rubbish collection system often does not work properly and people themselves add to the problem by dropping litter in the streets. There is so much we could do to help solve the problem. The point is how willing we are to do something about it.

Telling the Whole Food Truth As a teacher of whole-food vegetarian cookery, I do feel a certain sympathy with the ‘Men for Meat’ group. There is both confusion and just plain, unappetizing cooking in this area, when a whole-food/ vegetable diet should and can be highly nutritious and utterly delicious.

The words ‘whole-food’ and ‘vegetarian’ are not synonymous: vegetarians do not eat any ‘fish, flesh or fowl’. Most eat dairy products. Those who don’t are called vegans. I tell students not to turn vegetarian until they have become knowledgeable about nutrition, and especially about protein. It’s very easy to become a sick vegetarian.

And a whole-food diet just consists of eating the whole of food, with nothing added, and nothing taken away. For example, you eat whole-wheat flour, not white flour, which has had had bleach added. In all, no refined carbohydrates are eaten and very fatty and additive-laden foods are avoided and the stress is on fresh products of the best quality. And that’s all - except you must then find recipes which are both healthy and delicious because you’ll have to cook it all yourself. Very few ready-bought meals fulfill both requirements.

You can fish in the streams of most of  the parks. The park keepers sometimes go with the visitors on walks to tell them about the animals, plants, and mountains. B. Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer (1.25pts)

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times. Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is actually having.
