Read a text about common wedding rituals in the USA and answer the questions that follow.

The rules of etiquette in American restaurants depend upon a number of factors the physical location of the restaurant, e.g., rural or urban; the type of restaurant, e.g., informal or formal; and certain standards that are more universal. In other words, some standards of etiquette vary significantly while other standards apply almost anywhere. Learning the proper etiquette in a particular type of restaurant in a particular area may sometimes require instruction, but more commonly it simply requires sensitivity and experience. For example, while it is acceptable to read a magazine in a coffee shop, it is inappropriate to do the same in a more luxurious setting. And, if you are eating in a very rustic setting it may be fine to tuck your napkin into your shirt, but if you are in a sophisticated urban restaurant this behavior would demonstrate a lack of manners. It is safe to say, however, that in virtually every restaurant it is unacceptable to indiscriminately throw your food on the floor. The conclusion we can most likely draw from the above is that while the types and locations of restaurants determine etiquette appropriate to them, some rules apply to all restaurants.

V. Reading the following text and answer the questions below.

The world's oceans have warmed 50 percent faster over the last 40 years than previously thought due to climate change, Australian and US climate researchers reported Wednesday. Higher ocean temperatures expand the volume of water, contributing to a rise in sea levels that is submerging small island nations and threatening to wreak havoc in low-lying, densely-populated delta regions around the globe.

The study, published in the British journal Nature, adds to a growing scientific chorus of warnings about the pace and consequences rising oceans. It also serves as a corrective to a massive report issued last year by the Nobel-winning UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), according to the authors.

Rising sea levels are driven by two things: the thermal expansion of sea water, and additional water from melting sources of ice. Both processes are caused by global warming. The ice sheet that sits atop Greenland, for example, contains enough water to raise world ocean levels by seven metres (23 feet), which would bury sea-level cities from Dhaka to Shanghai.

Trying to figure out how much each of these factors contributes to rising sea levels is critically
important to understanding climate change, and forecasting future temperature rises, scientists say. But up to now, there has been a perplexing gap between the projections of computer-based climate models, and the observations of scientists gathering data from the oceans.

The new study, led by Catia Domingues of the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, is the first to reconcile the models with observed data. Using new techniques to assess ocean temperatures to a depth of 700 metres (2,300 feet) from 1961 to 2003, it shows that thermal warming contributed to a 0.53 millimetre-per-year rise in sea levels rather than the 0.32 mm rise reported by the IPCC.

23. What happens when the ocean's temperature rises?

A. It causes sea levels to rise.

B. It causes sea levels to remain constant.

C. It causes sea levels to decrease.

24. The rise in water levels is especially dangerous for small island nations and:

A. low-lying urban areas.

B. all coastal cities.

C. people who live on the beach.

25. The new study:

A. shows that thermal warming contributed to a 0.32 millimeter-per-year rise in sea levels.

B. did not reveal anything that scientists didn't already know.

C. used new techniques to assess ocean temperatures.

26. Ultimately, the new study should help scientists to:

A. lower water levels.

B. better predict climate change.

C. bury sea-level cities like Dhaka and Shanghai.

27. What was the main finding of the study?

A. That not enough is being done about global warming.

B. That ocean waters have warmed faster than scientists had previously thought.

C. That the warming of the world's oceans is not a threat.

VI. Read the following passage and choose the best answer to fill in each blank.

It is a common belief that adults are responsible for „big issues‟ such as environmental protection and conservation, and youths can do nothing but focus on their studies or have fun. (28) ______, the stories of the young people in the Young Voices for the Planet show that even at a young age, people are able to do something for their communities and can really contribute to the care and preservation of the environment.

Kids can also do things to (29) ________ a difference, given the chance. And though their skills and talents may vary, they can use their unique gifts to help to preserve the environment and save the world. One of the children in the stories, Olivia, says:

"Every one of us has a great gift we can use to help the earth. Everyone, (30) _____ any age, can do something, whether it is picking up rubbish along the side of the road, filling a bird feeder, or bringing reusable bags to the grocery store. For me, I used my artwork. Find your cause and use your talents. The quality of our world is counting on you."

It is remarkable that someone (31)_____ as Olivia can understand so well the connection between society, the environment, and the problems we are facing today. It has been proved that every small act of kindness we show can make a great impact on the world around us.

For some people, (32)________ protection and conservation means stopping the growth and development of technology and society. But this is a popular belief that is not true. Protecting the environment isn't about stopping progress. It's about (33)______ our consumption habits and taking care of the environment. Just by doing simple things, every one of us including the youths can do their share in making this world a better place to live.

A. Lan: Well, what do you think we should do to help to reduce our community's carbon footprint?

B. Mai: I agree. And I think we should also try to use less paper.

C. Minh: In my opinion, we should start cutting down our energy use. If we use LED light bulbs or turning off electronic devices when they are not in use, we can save a large amount of electricity.

D. Lan: Uh-huh. These things are very easy to do. What do you think, Mai?

E. Mai: This can help to save trees and forests since most paper products are made from wood. Do you agree with me, Lan?

F. Minh: Use less paper? What makes you think so?

G. Lan: Well, I don't think that will help much. I believe that we should start a reuse-and-recycle campaign. Then we can help to reduce waste and pollution, and conserve natural resources

Dating Customs Around the World

Dating is rare in Afghanistan because most marriages are arranged by parents, and schools are separate for boys and girls. The opportunities to meet are rare. Girls have a 7.00 pm curfew, while boys have an 11.00 pm curfew.

It is against the law to date in Iran. Teens are separated until they are of marrying age, then their families introduce them to each other and sometimes a courtship follows.

Most teens go out in large groups and don’t pair off until they are 18 or 19 years old in Australia. Girl often asks boy out and pay off the date, too. Couples often go to dinner parties, barbecues, or the beach.

Dating is usually a group event in Europe. In Spain, teens join a pandilla, a club for a group of friends with the same interests, like cycling or hiking. Dating is done one-to-one and both girls and boys ask each other out and split the cost of the evening’s entertainment.

In Russia, dates take place at dances or at club where teens eat or chat with friends. As many as 30 teens may come to a cinema to attend a movie together. In small towns, teens meet in the streets downtown or gather around a fountain.

In Japan and Korea, most high school students don’t date or go to parties, but spend their time studying instead. Dating begins in college, when only boys do the asking and pay for the dates.

The 22nd Southeast Asian Games were held in Viet Nam from the 5th to 13th December, 2003. Although it was the first time Viet Nam hosted such a big sports event, the Games were a great success. The Games really became a festival that impressed sports enthusiasts with its spirit: solidarity, co-operation for peace and development.

Athletes from 11 participating countries competed in 32 sports, and 444 gold medals were won. Some teams such as table tennis, badminton, karate, volleyball, basketball and wrestling were composed of top competitors in the region. Many Games records were close to international levels. Viet Nam won 158 gold medals to finish at the top of the Southeast Asian Games medal standings. Thailand ranked second with 90 golds, and Indonesia was third with only 55 golds. Singapore and Viet Nam were the two nations which had participants who were presented with the Most Outstanding Athlete titles in the Swimming and Shooting events. The Vietnamese Women's Football team successfully defended the SEA Games title. Viet Nam and Thailand played in the Men's Football Final. The Thai Team won the gold medal. In other sports such as karate, athletics, bodybuilding and wushu, the young and energetic Vietnamese athletes performed excellently and won a lot of gold medals.

Viet Nam's first place finish was not surprising. Firstly, to prepare for the 22nd SEA Games, Viet Nam carried out an intensive programme for its athletes, which included training in facilities, both home and abroad. Secondly, with the strong support of their countrymen, the Vietnamese athletes competed in high spirits. A plan has been proposed for Viet Nam to host the Asia Sports Games at some point in the future.

Natalie du Toit, the South African swimmer, was only seventeen when she lost her leg in a road accident. At that time, she was a strong and determined young swimmer and many people were starting to see her name up in lights. She almost qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympics at the age of 16. This meant that she would definitely take home the gold in Athens at the 2004 Olympics.

Unfortunately, 2001 took a turn for the worst for Natalie. She was going to a training session at the swimming pool on her motorbike when a car hit her. Her leg had to be amputated at the knee. Everybody thought that she would never be able to swim competitively again.

However, this South African swimmer never lost sight of her dreams. Even after losing her leg in the accident, her dream was still to compete at the Olympics. No matter how big the accident seemed, her dream was always bigger. She now is one of the world’s fastest distance swimmers and the only amputee to qualify for the Olympic Games. She qualified for the finals of the 800 meter freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in 2002. This marked the very first time an amputee in the modern era had raced in the finals of an able-bodied international swimming competition. Unfortunately, Natalie didn’t come close to winning. But did that even matter? She was named outstanding athlete of the 2002 Commonwealth Games! This was also her way of showing the world that even though she had half a leg, she would still do great things.

“I remember how thrilled I was the first time that I swam after recovering from the operation – it felt like my leg was there. It still does,” says Natalie. “The water is the gift that gives me back my leg and encourages me to continue swimming. I’m still the same person I was before the accident.
