V-Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

The population of the world has increased more in modern times than in all other ages of history combined. World population totaled about 500 million in 1650. It doubled in the period from 1650 - 1680. By the year 2000, the population will be about 6.6 billion. Estimates based on research by the United Nations indicate that it will double in the twenty-five years between 1975 and the year 2000.

No one knows the limits of the population that the earth can support. Thomas Malthus, an English economist, developed a theory that became widely accepted in the nineteenth century. He suggested that because world population tended to increase more rapidly than food supply, we should continuously constrain available resources. Malthus cited wars, famines, epidemics and other disasters as in the usual limitations of world population growth. With recent advances in science and technology, including improved agricultural methods and great progresses and in medicine, some of the limiting factors in population growth have been lessened, with obvious results. International organizations have recommended programmes to encourage general economic development that target areas along with a decrease in birth rates to effect a lasting solution.

III. READING (0.25 point/correct answer)

Read the passage and do the tasks that follow.

Super skyscrapers, underwater cities, 3D-printed homes, and holidays in space will all be a reality in 100 years' time, according to the SmartThings Future Living Report. The report presented findings from a survey conducted by Samsung’s SmartThings company with a group of experts on space, architecture, and urban planners. Several futurologists and adults of different occupations also took part in the survey.

The experts suggest that in a century's time humans will be able to live in 'Earth-scrapers', which will go up to 25 storeys underground. They also believe that 'bubble cities' will be created underwater making the depths habitable for humans. They say the way we live, work and play will be totally different to how we do these things today. The authors of the report say that 25 years ago, people could not imagine how the Internet and smartphones would change our lives. They have revolutionised the way we communicate, learn and do daily things. So, it is understandable that the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.

Researchers also questioned 2,000 adults about the predictions they thought were most likely to happen in the future. Respondents predict that in the future, few people will go to an office but will work from home and have virtual work meetings instead. People will have advanced 3D printers that will let us download a design for furniture or a food recipe and then 'print' the sofa, table or pizza at home. There will also be less need for visits to the doctor. We will all have a home health capsule which will tell us what the problem is and give us treatment. We will also go into space for holidays and to get resources that we have used up on Earth. A prediction that was missing was about the popularity of English – whether people would still need to study English or not.

For each question, circle the correct option (A, B, C, or D).

Teenagers can take good care of their skins by protecting it from the sun and providing nutrients for it. First, too much exposure to the sun is bad for their growing skins. It may lead to sunburn, freckles, and pimples. To avoid bad impact of direct strong sunlight, teens should wear protective clothing and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 when they go out, especially during summer time. Second, teenagers need good nutrients for skins to grow healthy. For example, they should drink a lot of water to avoid water loss so that their skins do not become too dry and break out. Skin experts also suggest eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables to supply enough vitamins and fibres to strengthen the skin’s structure. In conclusion, careful protection and a healthy diet are the keys to a healthy skin.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Though called by sweet-sounding names like Firinga or Katrina, tropical cyclones are huge rotating storms 200 to 2,000 kilometers wide with winds that blow at speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour (kph).

Weather professionals know them as tropical cyclones, but they are called hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea, typhoons in the Pacific Ocean, and cyclones in the Indian Ocean. They occur in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Large ones have destroyed cities and killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Tropical cyclones begin over water that is warmer than 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) slightly north or south of the earth’s equator. Warm, humid air full of water vapor moves upward. The earth’s rotation causes the growing storm to start to rotate around its center (called the eye). At a certain height, the water vapor condenses, changing to liquid and releasing heat. The heat draws more air and water vapor upward, creating a cycle as air and water vapor rise and liquid water falls. If the cycle speeds up until winds reach 118 kilometers per hour, the storm qualifies as a tropical cyclone.

Most deaths in tropical cyclones are caused by storm surge. This is a rise in sea level, sometimes seven meters or more, caused by the storm pushing against the ocean’s surface. Storm surge was to blame for the flooding of New Orleans in 2005. The storm surge of Cyclone Nargis in 2008 in Myanmar pushed seawater nearly four meters deep some 40 kilometers inland, resulting in many deaths.

It has never been easy to forecast a tropical cyclone accurately. The goal is to know when and where the next tropical cyclone will form. “And we can’t really do that yet,” says David Nolan, a weather researcher from the University of Miami. The direction and strength of tropical cyclones are also difficult to predict, even with computer assistance. In fact, long-term forecasts are poor; small differences in the combination of weather factors lead to very different storms. More accurate forecasting could help people decide to evacuate when a storm is on the way.

13. As stated in paragraph 1, tropical cyclones are storms with winds blowing at speeds of ______.

          A. more than 100 kph                                      B. at least 200 kph
