LÝ THUYẾT VÀ BÀI TẬP SHOULD, OUGHT TO, HAD BETTER

1.1. Điểm chung của Should – Ought to – Had better

- Đều mang nghĩa “nên” (làm gì) và theo sau là động từ nguyên thể (+Verb)

- Cấu trúc: S + should/ought to/ had better + V

- Ví dụ:

Minh should take the TOEIC test before the internship time.

You ought to ask her for help.

They had better not be late.

1.2. Sự khác nhau của Should – Ought to – Had better

OUGHT TO là lời khuyên mang tính nhấn mạnh hơn SHOULD, OUGHT TO có hàm ý là không thể còn cách nào khác hơn là phải (làm gì đó), mang tính giải pháp, diễn tả một khả năng hành động sự việc có thể xảy ra với mức độ chắc chắn cao.

Ngoài ra, khi nói về một nhiệm vụ hoặc một điều luật, chúng ta thường sử dụng ‘ought to’.

Ví dụ: He ought to get the promotion. He works really hard.

(Anh ấy chắc phải được thăng chức. Anh ta làm việc thật sự siêng năng).

HAD BETTER: lời khuyên về sự vật sự việc cụ thể, hoặc diễn đạt điều gì đó tốt nhất nên làm trong tình huống xảy ra ở hiện tại.

Ví dụ: We’d better hurry or we’ll miss the train.

(Chúng nên nhanh lên nếu không sẽ lỡ chuyến tàu mất).
