While previous generations of American students have had to sit through tests, never have the tests been given so frrequently and never have they played such a prominent role in schooling. Exams used to be administered mostly to decide where to place kids or what kind of help they needed; only recently have scores been published in the newspaper and used as the primary criteria for judging children, teachers, and schools indeed, as the basis for flunking students or denying them a diploma, deciding where money should be spent, and so on. Tests have lately become a mechanism by which public officials can impose their will on schools, and they are doing so with a vengeance.

This situation is also unusual from an intemational perspective. "Few countries today give these formal examinations to students before that age of sixteen or so," two scholars report. In the us, we give standardized tests to children as young as six, despite the fact that almost all experts in early childhood education condemn this practice. And it isn't easy to find other countries that give multiple-choice tests to students of any age.

In short, our children are tested to an extent that is unprecedented in our history and unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Rather than seeing this as odd, or something that needs to be defended, many of us have come to take it for granted. The result is that most of today's discourse about education has been reduced to a crude series of monosyllables: "Test scores are too low. Make them go up."

Indulging oneself is a common coping strategy that proves of almost no value in helping us deal with problems. Consider the example of Dong, whose girlfriend of 18 months has just broken up with him. In response, Doug has dived into a number of self-indulgent habits that he had previously held to a minimum. He is smoking at least a pack of cigarettes a day. As soon as he is home from work, he pours himself a slug of Corona Extra - a beverage he continues to sip through the evening until he passes out. On the weekends, he hits a nearby casino with some fellow single friends and gambles far more than he can afford to lose.

Doug would describe each of these behaviors -smoking, drinking, and gambling - as pleasurable. And yet, when practiced to excess, each of them has a negative effect on his overall well-being. None of them addresses the problem that is the source of his stress - why his relationship with his girlíriend has ended.

People who respond to stressful events by indulging themselves are attempting to compensate for a lack of satisfaction in one area of their lives by providing themselves with an alternate form of satisíaction Drinking, stoking, binge eating, shopping sprees, drug use, and gambling are all forms of self-indulgence commonly used to compensate for stressful events. Not surprisingly, this form of coping leads to its own problems, in the shape of poor physical health, addiction, and financial problems.

A recent form of this maladaptive coping style is seen in people who respond to the stress of daily life by spending excessive amount of time online. Some people become so immersed in the Virtual world of online games, websites, social networking, and so on, that it seems no exaggeration to call them "Internet addicts. People who spend an inordinate amount of time on the Internet often describe themselves as feeling empty lost, depressed, and anxious when they are not able to be online. Their real-life relationships, as well as the ability to function at work or at school, suffer as they become more immersed in their online activities. Like other forms of self-indulgence as coping strategy, Internet overuse can end up creating, rather than solving problems in the subject's life.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions

Different cultures follow their own special customs when a child's baby teeth fall out. In Korea, for example, they have the custom of throwing lost teeth up on the roof of a house. According to tradition, a magpie will come and take the tooth. Later, the magpie will return with a new tooth for the child. In other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam, children follow a similar tradition of throwing their lost teeth onto the roofs of houses.

Birds aren't the only animals thought to take lost teeth. In Mexico and Spain, tradition says a mouse takes a lost tooth and leaves some money. However, in Mongolia, dogs are responsible for taking teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture and are considered guardian angels of the people.

Tradition says that the new tooth will grow good and strong if the baby tooth is fed to a guardian angel. Accordingly, parents in Mongolia will put their child's lost tooth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.

The idea of giving lost teeth to an angel or fairy is also a tradition in the West. Many children in Western countries count on the Tooth Fairy to leave money or presents in exchange for a tooth. The exact origins of the Tooth Fairy are a mystery, although the story probably began in England or Ireland centuries ago. According to tradition, a child puts a lost tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. In the wee hours, while the child is sleeping, the Tooth Fairy takes the tooth and leaves something else under the pillow. In France, the Tooth Fairy leaves a small gift. In the United States, however, the Tooth Fairy usually leaves money. These days, the rate is 1 USD to 5 USD per tooth, adding up to a lot of money from the Tooth Fairy!

Urbanization results in more, large cities. Lager cities create a new set of transportation sanitation and infrastructure requirement and change the fundamental market dynamics for companies in a wide variety of industries. New technologies, process, products and engineering solutions are being created to address the unique issues resulting from the unprecedented rate and scale of urbanization that is happening now.

The impact of  urbanization falls into three primary categories. The first is infrastructure, as public officials and city planners need to build infrastructure to support large populations in a sustainable fashion, which private companies will ultimately build and manage. The second are private development companies, which compete with their peers to build and manage large dwellings, venues and facilities that people live, shop, eat and are entertained in. The third are consumer products companies that sell goods and services to people whose consumption patterns are influenced by where and how they live.

Urbanization in the United States coincides with a deep need to modernize city infrastructure. The infrastructure for many American cities was created in the post-war era and has neared or surpassed its planned lifespan. Additionally, this infrastructure often supports a large population than projected and new technologies are available but have not yet been incorporated into infrastructure projects. We see abundant evidence that cities across the United States are looking for solutions to these issues. Among this evidence is the American Society of Civil Engineers, which scores United States infrastructure broadly as a D+, starting the United States requires 3.6 trillion dollar in needed investment by 2020.

Urban markets are different from suburban or rural markets for companies who build and sell goods and services. This is not a new challenge and some companies have adapted better than others as this new reality has started to take shape  in recent years. However, the rate of change continues to increase and the collision of more people and new types of infrastructure will impact markets and force companies to continue to adapt. There will be companies that gain and lose market share resulting from the decisions they make to prepare for shifting markets. There will also be companies that fail and new companies that emerge resulting from shifting market dynamics.

Cities, urban planner and related public also face major challenge to accommodate sustainable growth and incorporate new technological in an appropriate, cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable fashion. Some cities will likely over-invest in the wrong technologies and design approaches. Others will underestimate the scale of impending change and fail to plan accordingly resulting in deteriorating and dangerous cities.

In summary, urbanization represents a structural change to the global system that both companies and public institutions will spend money to plan for. Unlike some of our more early-stage themes, urbanization is occurring now and will continue for the foreseeable future.
