Thì Quá Khứ Đơn
⒈ Cách dùng:
- Thì quá khứ đơn dùng để miêu tả hành động đã xảy ra và chấm dứt trong quá khứ và biết thời gian xác định.
Ví dụ: Phong went to Dalat last summer.
(Phong đã đến Đà Lạt mùa hè năm ngoái.)
- Thì quá khứ đơn dùng để miêu tả hành động đã xảy ra suốt một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ nhưng đã chấm dứt.
Ví dụ: Tien worked as a waiter for two years before she went abroad.
(Tiên đã làm bồi bàn được hai năm trước khi cô ấy đi nước ngoài.)
- Diễn đạt một hành động xen vào một hành động khác đang diễn ra trong quá khứ, khi đó, hành động đang diễn ra sẽ chia thì quá khứ tiếp diễn, còn hành động xen vào sẽ chia thì quá khứ đơn.
Ví dụ: When I was watching TV, Mr. Brandon came to visit my parents.
(Khi tôi đang xem TV thì Bác Brandon đến thăm bố mẹ tôi)
⒉ Cấu trúc:
Thể khẳng định:S (Chủ ngữ) + V2/-ed (Động từ ở thì quá khứ)
Ví dụ: I went to sleep at 11p.m last night.
(Tôi đi ngủ lúc 11 giờ tối qua.)
Thể phủ định:
- Đối với động từ đặc biệt như to be và động từ khiếm khuyết:S (Chủ ngữ) + V2/-ed (Động từ ở thì quá khứ) + not
Ví dụ: I couldn’t open the door yesterday.
(Tôi đã không thể mở được cửa hôm qua.)
- Đối với động từ thường và động từ bất quy tắc:S (Chủ ngữ)+ did not (didn’t) + bare infinitive (Động từ nguyên mẫu)
Ví dụ: He didn’t play football last Sunday.
(Anh ấy đã không chơi bóng đá vào chủ nhật tuần trước.)
Thể nghi vấn:
- Đối với động từ đặc biệt như to be và động từ khiếm khuyết:V2/-ed (Động từ ở thì quá khứ) + S (Chủ ngữ?)
Ví dụ: Were they in the hospital last month?
(Họ đã ở bệnh viện tháng rồi?)
- Đối với động từ thường và động từ bất quy tắc:Did/Did not (Didn’t) + S (Chủ ngữ) + bare infinitive (Động từ nguyên mẫu)?
Ví dụ: Did you see your boyfriend esterday?
(Bạn có gặp bạn trai của bạn hôm qua?)
- Câu hỏi sử dụng từ để hỏi như What, When, Where, Why, How:
• Động từ đặc biệt như to be và động từ khiếm khuyết:Question words (Từ để hỏi) + V2/-ed (Động từ ở thì quá khứ) + S (Chủ ngữ)?
Ví dụ: Where were you last night?
(Bạn đã ở đâu tối qua?)
• Động từ thường và động từ bất quy tắc:Question words (Từ để hỏi) + did/didn’t + S (Chủ ngữ) + bare infinitive (Động từ nguyên mẫu)?
Ví dụ: Where did you sleep last night?
(Bạn đã ngủ ở đâu tối qua?)
⒊ Quy tắc chia động từ cho thì quá khứ đơn:
• Đối với động từ to be:NgôiV2/-ed
• Đối với động từ thường:I, she, he, it was they, we, you were
Động từ có quy tắc:
Khi chia động từ có quy tắc ở thì quá khứ, ta chỉ cần thêm hậu tố “-ed” vào cuối động từ.
Ví dụ: stayed, watched, listened, talked
Cách phát âm “-ed”:
- Đọc là /id/: khi tận cùng của động từ là /t/, /d/
- Đọc là /t/: khi tận cùng của động từ là /ch/, /s/, /x/, /sh/, /k/, /f/, /p/
- Đọc là /d/: khi tận cùng của động từ là các phụ âm và nguyên âm còn lại
Động từ bất quy tắc:
Có một số động từ khi sử dụng ở thì quá khứ không theo qui tắc thêm “ed”. Những động từ này ta cần học thuộc.
Ví dụ:Động từV2Nghĩa

⒋ Dấu hiệu nhận biết:
Trong câu có các từ như: yesterday, ago, last (week, year, month), in the past, the day before, với những khoảng thời gian đã qua trong ngày (today, this morning, this afternoon).
Sau as if, as though (như thể là), it’s time (đã đến lúc), if only, wish (ước gì), would sooner/ rather (thích hơn)
Ví dụ:
Yesterday morning, Tom got up early; then he ate breakfast and went to school.
