I. GRAMMAR:

UNIT 1:                    A. Lý thuyết:

Infinitive with TO and Infinitive without TO

1.  Infinitive with TO :

   + is used to express a purpose. Ex: I’m learning English to get a good job.

   + is used after adjectives. Ex: I’m pleased to see you.

   + is used after interrogative pronouns: what, who, where, how, ...  Ex : Tell me what to do.

   + is used after indefinite pronouns: something, nothing, anybody,… Ex : He has nothing to do.

   + is used after some verbs : want, need, decide, refuse, offer, hope, fail, agree, tend, plan, arrange, learn, promise, afford, care, manage, attempt ... Ex : I want to buy that house.

2. Infinitive without TO

   + is used after some verbs : make, let,see, hear, watch, feel,… + Object

       Ex : Nothing can make him cry.

               I saw the man get into the car.

   + is used after modal verbs: will, shall, could, can , should, must, may,…

       Ex: I must speak to the manager .

 You should go to bed early.                       

B. Practice:

* Exercise 1: Put the verbs in brackets in the correct form:

2. Present Continuous:                    S + am/is/are + V-ing……

                                                           - Am/Is/Are + S + V-ing ….?

                                                           - S + am/is/are + not + V-ing…..

Ex: - He is reading a book now.

      - Are you learning English at the moment?

      - Look! The girl is crying.

3. Present Perfect:                           S + has/have +V3/ed….

                                                           - Has/Have + S + V3/ed….?

                                                           - S + has/have + not + V3/ed…..

Ex: - We have been friends for a long time.

      - Have you ever met them?

      - She hasn’t visited her uncle since she was 15.

4. Simple Past:                                  S + V2/ed                                     S + was / were + ….

                                                           - Did + S + V + …?                       - Was / Were + S + …..

                                                           - S + didn’t + V + …                     - S + was / were + not + ….

Ex: - I went to school three days ago

- Did you watch TV last night?

- Peter wasn’t at home  yesterday evening.

5. Past Continuous:                         S + was / were + Ving

                                                           - Was/Were + S + V-ing….?

                                                           - S + was/were + not + V-ing…..

Ex: -  What were you doing from 3p.m to 6p.m last Sunday?

      - When I came yesterday, he was sleeping.

      - What was she doing when you saw her?

      - Yesterday, I was cooing while my sister was washing the dishes

6. Past perfect:                                 S + had + V3/ed

                                                           - Had + S + V3/ed….?

                                                           - S + had + not + V3/ed…..

Ex: - I had done my homework before I played football.

      - After he had finished university, he worked for his father’s company.

      - We had lived in Hue before 1975

                      B. Practice:

* Exercise 1: Put the verbs in the brackets into the correct tenses

1. INFINITIVE AND GERUND

1.1 Verbs followed by To-inf:

V + (O) + To-inf

 

1.2 Verbs followed by Gerund:

V + (O) + V-ing

      

1.3 Verbs followed by To-inf and Gerund:

1.3.1 Without changing meaning:

- like                - hate               - love               - continue                    - begin / start

Ex:       He began to study / studying English 2 years ago.

1.3.2 Changing meaning:

- remember      - forget             - regret             - stop               - try                  - need

Ex:       We regret to inform you that we are not employing any staff at present.

             I regret spending all that money. I’ve got none left.

2. PASSIVE INFINITIVE AND GERUND

2.1. Examples:

 - She expects to be  invited to Minh’s birthday party.

             V         to be + PP

- She enjoys being  invited to Minh’s birthday party.

           V           being + PP

2.2 Form:

2.1 Passive infinitive:

To be + Past Participle

2.2 Passive gerund:

Being + Past Participle

         B. Practice:
